ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed issued a statement following the juror's verdict of not guilty in the State of Florida vs. George Zimmerman case.
Mayor Reed stated, "The genuine tragedy of the Trayvon Martin case is that a mother and father lost their son senselessly. I find it troubling that a 17-year-old cannot walk to a corner store for candy without putting his life in danger. I find it more troubling that a citizen could not see a young African-American youth without immediately concluding that he was up to no good.
While I disagree with the jury's verdict, we must respect it. This case reminds me why my number one priority as Mayor is public safety. I work every day to create a safer city where our sworn police officers are trained and equipped to effectively uphold the law, so that our residents feel secure in their neighborhoods and our diverse communities respect each other. The death of Trayvon Martin shows that we must all work harder to shed the dangerous stereotypes that can have devastating consequences for individuals, families and our society."
The six all-female jurors delivered their verdict shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday. The case was held in Sanford, Florida, where Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by Zimmerman.
The shooting and later trial brought the south Florida town into the national spotlight.
Here’s the comments after CBSAtlanta’s story on Reeds statement: (As I told my husband, those women knew...people are fed up and pissed with what is going on...and they weren’t going to play the “race” game.)

Mr. Mayor, if you respect the jury’s verdict then do so. Your statement is anything but respect for their verdict. Unfortunately, it is what I have come to expect from the supposed “leaders” in my community.

“This case reminds me why my number one priority as Mayor is public safety. “ Well arent you the politician. You could careless about the people of Atlanta. All you care about is you career. Look no farther than what the police of Atlanta are paid. The streets of Atlanta are currently over run with thugs like Martin and the time is coming to where the people will become the Zimmermans. The people are fed up with it !
If Mayor Reed wishes for blacks to shed their negative stereotypes, then perhaps he might convince his brothers to stop behaving like thugs and become productive, law-abiding citizens. Until that happens, the stereotypes will remain accurate.
The police will now have to return his keltec.
If I were Zimmerman, I would upgrade to S&W Shield or SIG because he has a lot of people out there mad at him.
I would consider going out of state for a while. Take a long vacation in Canada or something.
I advise workers in Washington Dc to stay off the Green line thru Anacostia next week.
Good advice no matter what time of the year.
What everyone seems to have lost sight of on the KILL ZIMMERMAN side is that Trayvon’s parents lost their child a long time ago. Trayvon didn’t live with either bio-parent, and all his other relatives had enough of his thuggery down in Miami. If the Miami-Dade cops had done their job and put him in juvenile detention for his myriad infractions of the law, Trayvon would still be alive.
Wow, I hope a hundred people send your comment to the mayor. It’s OK to kill whitey, I guess.
Duck?
Au contraire, playing knock out with armed citizens does end well!
Reed is another enemy. These sick vermin want a race war.
That mayor is a despicable racist POS.
In October I was robbed at gunpoint in Atlanta by three black men. The one with the cheap ass 380 on me was about 14 years old. Mr. Mayor? I never heard a word from your black ass! Thanks prick!
I’m sorry but America is in for Civil War and anarchy if we allow what passes for “black justice” to be the order of the day.
These folks are every ounce as racist and crazy as were the KKK of old. They view everything as racial. They also live in a coddled fantasy world in which blacks can do no wrong.
TM was not killed for walking to the store as this idiot says. Simply were not the facts.
Well, he is lightyears ahead of most of the left.
He actually said we must all respect the jury.
Holder ain’t gonna like that.
[If he had stayed on the sidewalks and walked straight to his dads home, nobody would given him a second look.]
Exactly. There was a four minute period after Trayvon’s phone call and the time of the shot. The distance Trayvon needed to go for safety was less than 100 feet. So, he could not go 100 feet in less than 4 minutes to be safe? What the hell was Trayvon doing in that 4 minute period.?
Do you know after all this time, I hadn’t heard that ‘100 feet’ remark.
Think of the simple explanation the media could have come up with, that would have made people start thinking the other way.
What a lost opportunity..., well perhaps I should say, what a vile fabricated opportunity instead.
Thanks for the mention.
The total lack of reality in this statement is positively Middle Eastern. He just ignores the parts of the story that complicate his race-victimhood interpretation. Just pretends they're not there. It's amazing.
