New York Lawmakers Outraged at Trayvon Martin Verdict

Officials and various candidates for office joined in the flood of outrage tonight following the not guilty verdict in the racially-charged trial of George Zimmerman for the killing of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.

Former Comptroller Bill Thompson, the mayoral race’s only black candidate, released and tweeted a terse, one-line statement slamming the decision, which was read tonight just before 10 p.m.

“Trayvon Martin was killed because he was black,” declared Mr. Thompson. “There was no justice done today in Florida.”

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn further slammed the acquittal as “a shocking insult to his family and everyone seeking justice for Trayvon.”

“Trayvon Martin was an innocent, unarmed young man with a full life ahead of him when he was tragically shot to death last February,” she said in a lengthy statement, which labeled the killing “senseless” and called for reforms to Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” laws. “But we must also put an end to a culture that presumes any young man of color – little more than a child – is looking to commit a crime, simply because he was walking down the street.”

Over Twitter, another mayoral candidate, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio called the decision “a slap in the face to justice,” adding, “Trayvon Martin’s death was a terrible tragedy.”

“Today’s decision is shocking and highlights the sad reality that the day of equal justice for Trayvon and millions of other young men of color has yet to arrive,” said City Comptroller and fellow Gracie Mansion contender John Liu. “And it reminds us that we must strengthen our efforts to further equality and justice for all.”

Members of the City Council also took to Twitter and Facebook to share their reactions to the jury’s decision.

“Not guilty verdict, really? I’m truly disgusted right now. #NoJustice,” tweeted Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito. “My heart is heavy.”

City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez was equally angry. “Sadly, a family in Florida will go to bed tonight still missing a son, still yearning for justice. RIP #Trayvon, America has failed you,” he wrote. “It is clear for all to see that racism is still alive & well across the country.”

Several candidate for other offices weighed in as well, including public advocate candidate Reshma Saujani, who said in a statement that “racism instead turned this trial into a gruesome display of character assassination.”

But the outpouring was not entirely one of outrage.

Republican City Councilman Eric Ulrich, for example, criticized the outrage.

“Zimmerman verdict is proof that innocence until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt is still the cornerstone of the justice system,” he tweeted, adding that, “The rights of the accused cannot be compromised by the court of public opinion. Everyone is entitled to a fair trial.”

He further went after Mr. Thompson for his statement, saying he was “extremely disappointed with the amount of race baiting and political pandering on Twitter tonight” and that he would “expect this type of remark from [Rev. Al Sharpton] not from you.”

OMG! And I have to choose among these dumba@@ scum for a mayor! It’s like having no choice at all. My union already endorsed Bill Thompson (who is black). Bill DiBlasio is married to a black woman. Quinn is a bull dyke. Liu has a tie to Chinese gangsters. I am frankly surprised to hear that Liu made such a statement. Had to be pandering to black voters, period.

“Trayvon Martin was killed because he was black”

He was killed because he was trying to kill someone else.

There are a lot of places in America I want to see, New York is not on my list. I was in Chicago once, much like Tijuana once was once too much!

THey would have been totally fine if GZ had lost and Trayvon would have murdered him.

What if GEORGE was instead a woman neighborhood watch person, killing her -we find out later 17 year old - attacker, and then being charged with murder. No sane system would take a victim that was a woman who was traumatized by going through that, fought the attacker and defended herself, and have a government prosecutor charge her and call her a cold-blooded child killer.

But they have no problem doing it for a guy who was basically in the same type of scenario, facing a punk kid skilled in fighting smashing him up and on top of him, finding his gun and saying he was going to kill him, and losing. Because GZ was a non-black guy and his attacker was a 17 year old punk the prosecutor wouldn’t look like a ghoul like he would trying that with a woman.

It is sick what our government did.

And if Trayvon would have murdered Goerge, he’d have been in court for murder. Overwhelming evidence he’d have done it. And guess what, the prosecution would not have portrayed him as innocent. all the info they fought to keep out, showing character and prior crimes would have been admitted, and at 17 he would have been tried as an adult, instead of the prosecution calling him a child.

If “black” means you have the right to beat people because of perceived disrespect then you are right. Otherwise you are dead wrong.

The scary thing isn't that a handful or morons said these things.

The scary thing is that these monsters are in the highest positions of power in this country. As Rush has said for years: the fringe has become the mainstream.

I’m directly across the river from them, and I know I don’t give a damn what they think. They make fools of themselves every single day.

If Trayvon Martin was killed because he was an African then, Bill Thompson, you’d best watch your back.

His statement was typical of a race-baiting pimp who will never own up to the fact that the large majority of negro youth are one of America’s biggest problems.
