Japan Ready to Declare: We’ll Go First

Japan has no intention to go it alone in defending its territory or national interests from growing threats in the Asia-Pacific region. But an annual defense review released Tuesday and other recent developments signal an increasing willingness on the part of Japan to go it alone, first.

Japan plans to establish a new National Security Council that would streamline how and when Tokyo would use military force, appoint a senior officer to command troops from all three armed services, and formally designate a Marine Corps-like force to defend its vulnerable southwest islands.

The United States remains Japan’s essential security partner, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has vowed to strengthen the U.S.-Japan defense alliance. But the new plans would allow Japan to respond to threats against its own territory without turning first to its long-time protector.

The annual Defense White Paper issued by the Ministry of Defense concludes that Japan faces “increasingly tangible, acute and serious” threats from its neighbors – meaning, China mostly — and must improve its ability to respond militarily, should that be necessary.

“The reality of the current international community suggests that it is not necessarily possible to prevent invasions from the outside by only nonmilitary means such as diplomatic efforts, and in the event that the nation were to be invaded it would not be able to remove such a threat…. For this reason, Japan is striving to develop proper defense capabilities to protect the lives and assets of the public and to defend the territorial land, sea and airspace of Japan,” the report says.

Japan has already laid down one carrier with a displacement of almost 30,000 tons, with plans for another two.

Technically they're LPHs (or what Japan calls helicopter-carrying destroyers - DDHs) without a fixed wing capability. They could be refitted to carry the F-35B, but not in the kinds of numbers that the QE class could.

The QE Class also has the benefit of being engineered for catapult launch/arrested landing capability. The Brits have gone back and forth and then back again on this, the QE and PoW will be completed as STOVL ships and its highly unlikely that they'll be "uprated" to handle CATOBAR during their lives. But the growth for such is engineered into them and the Japanese could complete sisters as such - allowing them to handle the F-35C and E-2.

..I lived in Sasebo, Japan on the island of Kyushu from 1969-1971. So, I know just a tad more than the average person about Japan. As a result, I can say that in my opinion the last thing the Chinese are going to do is F with Japan much more than they already are. The Japanese, at their core, are warriors and the Chinese are not. Samurai ethos is not dead in Japan. Japanese will fight the Chinese man for man and man to man to the last soldier....remember Iwo Jima! And, the Chinese know that, they are not stupid and have little history that I know of regarding launching major military invasions against MAJOR opponents that might kick their ass.

So, there never going to be an invasion of mainland Japan by the Chinese for that reason.

I’m no admiral but I think two aircraft carriers in the hands of the Japanese would last about as long as there WWII carriers when the shooting starts. They would be better advised to arm every man, woman and child in the country and train them plus update their nukes that few think they have but they surely do. Then, “Marines” by the several divisions and they should be in pretty good shape.

Who leads the world in electronic technology production? The Japanese will kick the Chinese paper giant’s ass if war broke out......rather like the Israeli’s have done to the Jihadi’s in 3 or 4 all out wars and hundreds of small unit fights.

It's a "helicopter carrying destroyer"

They will fight for legal kiddie porn and Hello Kitty sex toys for the pretten sex idols.

How noble a cause!

Please explain what you mean.

Japan celebrates perversion.Young girls are sex objects - what civilized country would have kiddie porn be legal?

It is so bad that it is culturally accepted. These girls are “idols”

“A nation of butchers.”

That may be so of the Japan of the first half of the 20th Century. Now (Red)China is acting the same way the militaristic Japan did during the first half of the 20th Century. China has become today’s “Japan.”

We need to form an alliance (NATO like organization) of Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. If China (or others like a resurgent Russia) attacks any...then they have attacked all. Hopefully, this will help slow down China’s world domination aspirations.

It’s well known in my neck of the woods that Japan’s well known export is either anime or hentai, or “perversion” which also includes “loli” or underage sex with below-18, or even 10 year old girls. What he termed “pre-teen sex idols” is that in Japan, “idols” are a big thing there, which simply requires underage girls, singing in half-naked costumes, singing to men on TV. That’s what GeronL was implying.

I moonlight as admin for a Jap website which includes anime, manga et al Jap crap.

I suspect the Japanese people of today are not the same ones as in 1971...no more so than current Americans are not the same. The average young Japanese has become as weak as the average young American. Heck our military has trouble finding enough physically fit 18-22 year olds for military service. Most are just not suitable - physically or mentally - for military service.

“That’s what GeronL was implying.”

Other than their fixation on Anime....I have read that the average young (under 30) Japanese male has little interest in sex....actually rather scary. Of course, American youth have too much interest.

“Of course, American youth have too much interest.” That is interest in sex, but not in stable marriage...just hedonistic pleasure with no responsibility. Not good at all.

From the standpoint of realpolitik... japan and china going at it reduces china’s impact.

The weird part of all this is, china makes it, and japan ships it-— that economic link makes this dicey. Unless the US cuts off chinese imports, not likely to happen

I suppose my inability to embrace the Japs comes from the neighbors when I was a kid...an older couple who'd had a son in the Army -- on Bataan.

They never heard from him again after New Years 1942....they never really recovered.

And/or more like China leading obamaumau, pulling strings through finance and other areas.

The Japanese would be a formidable opponent, if they can restrain their empire dreamers.

Imagine, yakuza vs. tongs, that kind of war.

Remember, their primary enemy is China. Does this mean you prefer forced abortions and a thriving sex-trafficking trade to the things you mentioned?

Also, does the Japanese Government actually fight for the two things you mentioned? Somehow, I doubt it.

At any rate: I see Japan as our ally and China as our enemy.

Perhaps you have a different perspective.
