Sowell: Is This Still America?
Creators Syndicate ^ | July 16, 2013 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 07/15/2013 9:02:37 AM PDT by jazusamo

There are no winners in the trial of George Zimmerman. The only question is whether the damage that has been done has been transient or irreparable.

Legally speaking, Zimmerman has won his freedom. But he can still be sued in a civil case, and he will probably never be safe to live his life in peace, as he could have before this case made him the focus of national attention and orchestrated hate.

More important than the fate of George Zimmerman, however, is the fate of the American justice system and of the public's faith in that system and in their country. People who have increasingly asked, during the lawlessness of the Obama administration, "Is this still America?" may feel some measure of relief.

But the very fact that this case was brought in the first place, in an absence of serious evidence — which became ever more painfully obvious as the prosecution strained to try to come up with anything worthy of a murder trial — will be of limited encouragement as to how long this will remain America.

The political perversion of the criminal justice system began early and at the top, with the President of the United States. Unlike other public officials who decline to comment on criminal cases that have not yet been tried in court, Barack Obama chose to say, "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon."

It was a clever way to play the race card, as he had done before, when Professor Henry Louis Gates of Harvard was arrested.

But it did not stop there. After the local police in Florida found insufficient evidence to ask for Zimmerman to be prosecuted, the Obama administration sent Justice Department investigators to Sanford, Florida, and also used the taxpayers' money to finance local activists...

I was waiting for the Sowell comments on this.

Clear thinking as always.

More important than the fate of George Zimmerman, however, is the fate of the American justice system and of the public's faith in that system and in their country. People who have increasingly asked, during the lawlessness of the Obama administration, "Is this still America?" may feel some measure of relief.

My feeling was that 'yes, the basic jury system still works' but at what price?

If I was attacked my skin color and lack of 'ethnic cover' would mean that every hateful thing done to George Zimmerman would work on me. NBC news would call me 'white' with enough hate to kill an elephant. They'd doctor tapes to make it worse. CNN could make up words and put them in my mouth - then retract their hate comments at 3 AM.

Bullies in the press have made sure Zimmerman's right to defend himself has been trumped by their right to do what they can to destroy his life.

Many of us will wonder if we'd just be better off allowing black thin-skinned thugs to beat us to death rather than go through the horror of a 'show trial'.

Then we saw the State act in criminal ways - holding back information - firing whistle blowers who wanted the truth to come out... The FBI and DOJ acting like Obama's personal army against his political opponents. Even after they discovered Zimmerman was a democrat who voted for Obama. That wasn't good enough. Having black blood wasn't good enough. Nothing was 'good enough' once they felt Zimmerman could be passes off as a conservative gun totting 'white guy'... The IRS evil, the FBI evil, all of it could be 'justified' with the destruction of Zimmerman. They weren't going to let him off the hook.

Liberal elites wanted blood - white middle class, middle aged conservative blood. And Zimmerman could be protrayed that way if the alphabets lied... and they did lie.

The rigged show trial was an excercise in hate aimed at 'right wingers' -even if Zimmerman wasn't one - he was portrayed as one. The FBI and DOJ wanted white conservative to lynch - Zimmerman would have to do... he was close enough for the goons to run with.

No, this isn't my country. I have little faith totalitarian jerks won't work to destroy the jury system now they know it's a weak link.

Expect calls from the boys in the press for professional juries. And a general mocking of private citizens. If the members of the jury are made public, Obama's boys in the MSM will go after them with the same hate and scorn they went after Zimmerman. It's not my country.

The truth.

As for the sickness America is suffering:

America contracted the disease on November 8, 1988

The disease became worse on November 3, 1992

On November 5, 1996 it became systemic.

On November 7, 2000 the country was given a huge dose of, what turned out to be ineffective, medicine.

On November 2, 2004 the disease received a much needed boost.

America was put on life support on November 4, 2008

Life support was removed on November 6, 2012. The patient still lives using autonomic functions. Once those have been killed the patient will die.

Sadly what you say regarding this fiasco is all true.

If we had a halfway decent leader in the WH many heads would roll from the DOJ to officials in FL and the enemedia, but many will say I'm nuts for even bringing that up.

Obummer, the supposed leader in the WH and his worshipers are the crux of the problem.

Agreed if the focus is on the Zimmerman/Martin Kangaroo court action, but if we are to step back from that focus, and Zoom out so to speak for a look at the BIG picture I think we’ll find our attentions have been successfully diverted from the ugliness that truly is the destination Obama’s handlers intend for us.

IOW I believe we’ve been duped by the party of unAmerican activities again.

I understand your trust in TS,

but that kind of thinking is EXACTLY how the left thinks -

“as long as we get the right person in power, one with benevolent motives and high intellect, we can trust him with as much power as he needs to set things aright”.

Sowell himself would oppose this.
(Maybe not Walter Williams though - [joking])

No, it is not. We have been reduced to a tribal society.

It's like living in a gang ridden neighborhood. Pretty soon you will be forced to pick which "tribe" you belong to. At some point the "creept ass crackers" are going to have to determine whether he chooses to be enslaved or to save their societies.

For sure your timeline is closer to the truth. The decline of the system overall and the corruption of justice has been progressing should be measured in decades, not years. It can be attributed to 535 members of Congress, and above.

If all white people were like Ronald Reagan, and all black people like Thomas Sowell, we’d have flying cars by now. I’m convinced of this.

There's little doubt you're right nor would we have constant race card fiascoes like we've had for years.

I always like reading the words of Thomas Sowell, based on a lot of common sense. I know when I graduated from college in 1990, at the time, the liberal viewpoint was so prevelent and I read columns and a lot of them I agreed with were from Thomas Sowell.

You are exactly right. The onus has been on white people from the start to be the ones to “not see color”. Others have used this to their advantage and run with it, because they “see color” with a vengeance, and use it for all it’s worth. Unless we want to remain the scapegoat for all evils in this country, and the whipping boy for the failures of others, we now have no choice but to come together as a tribe and damn the names we’ll be called for doing so-knock-out king and polar bear hunting can break our bones, words can never hurt us.

> And Sweden is getting more conservative!

Kind of interesting, I been to Sweden one time, really a nice country. As messed up as the US is getting, wouldn’t mind moving there. Plus working there, much more generous vacation time from the workplace. I remembered taking some vacation to New Zealand and met an older Swedish gentleman from the hostel. Mentioned to him I thought of wanting to live in Sweden but mentioned about their high tax rates were a big turnoff.

But now, with the leftism taking over this country, not a bad thought. Have to look over the income tax rates again both for the USA and Sweden. And then decide.

Placebo effect from a sugar pill, IMO.

The only real heroes in this trial were the jurors. They showed that this is still America — at least for now — despite politicians who try to cheapen or corrupt the law, as if this were some banana republic. Some are already calling for a federal indictment of George Zimmerman, after he has been acquitted.

Will this still be America then?

NO, it will NOT.

There's a huge silent majority of us, who agree with the jury's verdict.

We're out here acting like adults, because the other vociferous side isn't.

Eric Holder and his corrupt Justice Dept. had better realize that we're just about at the breaking point.

Well said my FRiend.

The race pimping has been going on way too long, it started with hustlers, among them Jackson and Sharpton.

The CBC joined in as well as leftists but now we have a race pimp in the WH that has thoroughly packed his Cabinet with them.

The silent majority, being law abiding people have stood by obeying our laws. The race card pimps from the WH on down had better wake up to the fact, like you said, that we are about at the breaking point.

Dunno if it is that easy. If your are not EU resident, you might have do some sort of “buy-in” or bring a lot of money with you.
But it isn’t a bad idea. I am going to get on my wife to get her New Zealand passport renewed.
