Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick took a solemn tone as he spoke with reporters at the State House on Monday about the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial.
"It's just sad," he said. "I don't know what you say to a young black boy, or mothers of young black boys if the message of this is that you can be pursued down the street by someone with a gun and if you try to defend yourself that person is justified in shooting you dead."
A Florida jury acquitted Zimmerman on Saturday of charges relating to the 2012 murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Patrick, who was once in charge of the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice, said the DOJ's line of recourse is limited. He called the verdict disappointing.
"I know the hazards of trying to second guess a jury, but from what I understand of the facts, it's a chilling thought that you could be in a neighborhood out buying a soda and a pack of Skittles and have your life taken from you by somebody who just thinks you don't look like you belong there," he said.
Patrick said he thought it was a good thing that Massachusetts doesn't have laws like Florida's "stand your ground" law.
"We all suffer from the suppositions we make about people based on what they look like, and where they are, and whether you think they belong where they are is a reminder that we're all going to have to continue to think outside of those boxes, and in this case thinking in that box was deadly."
It’s just sad that so many Amish yutes grow up to be thugs and end their lives in violent manner, when it could all be avoided if they were civilized.
Notice how few Governors and Mayors and Senators et al were “saddend” by the actions of the Supremist Court to pave the way for same sex marriages.
so so sad
What trial was he watching?
More false and misleading statements that will do nothing more than inflame racial divide and hatred. What is wrong with these idiot politicians? Are they complete idiots who will say and do anything to promote their agenda? Won't anyone prominent rise to counter their false and misleading statements?
Unfortunately, in the public forum, it's often the statements that are made last that are accepted as representative of the truth.
What is really sad is to see our elected representatives just substitute their own “set of facts” for the ones that exist and are real.
This only proves that these morons weren’t following the facts of the case, rather they get their information from the lame stream media.
Hmmmm, did he say the same thing after the OJ trial? You remember that trial, it’s where OJ killed not one but two white people and walked, I wonder what the buffoon deval had to say about that? I’m thinking he was one of the ones dancing in the street.
I think they know better.
"If we had a son, he would be Trayvon
and he would work with Dookhan in state labs ruining data."
Unless a politician is from the State of Florida, they have no business making any comments. The same holds true for stupid NFL players, Hollywood loons and forgotten singers—unless they were ON THE JURY/PAYING ATTENTION (many were and did not), they need to stop the tweets and threats.
I wonder if this government official is violating Zimmerman’s right to privacy?
So sayeth Devaluate “Lil Barry” Patrick
What you tell the mothers of young black boys is to not let them grow up to be thugs.
Po’ lil’ trayvon should have used his phone and called 911 instead of taking the law into his own hands. Or, he could have simply walked home. But no, he had to show that cracka that he was a bad ass gangsta.
