Did the system work? Was justice served? We like to think of those questions as identical. After all, the point of a criminal justice system is to dispense justice. But with the acquittal of George Zimmerman on charges of murdering Trayvon Martin, the system worked, yet justice fell short. This outcome is simultaneously sad but healthy — sad because a 17-year-old boy is dead and his killer walks free; healthy because the verdict seems justified as a matter of law ...

Mr. Zimmerman did not know Mr. Martin had been “returning from a Seven-Eleven”.
That “factoid” plays as little weight in this episode as Mr. Martin’s skin color.
That isn't always true. The legal system is there for a reason, but it can balance everything and account for all nuances.
Them Washington Post is supposed to be a serious newspaper.

Close. That it went to trial shows the flaws. That he was acquitted shows the system works.

Does the author have any new, compelling evidence that was not already presented to show that Zimmerman acted out of no other motive than SELF-DEFENSE?
I’ve asked this question to my liberal friends who want “JUSTICE FOR TRAYVON” : “What if you were being pounded to within an inch of your life and your head smashed on the pavement, would you just lie there and let the one punching you continue?”
None of them could give me a good answer.

Trayvon Martin considered Zimmerman a “creepy ass (white) cracker”, which led the racist black thug Trayvon Martin into an unprovoked attack on the innocent George Zimmerman.
An attack that *almost* took his life, until he shot the thug in self defense.
And... unlike your fantasy about what happened, *my* description actually comes with *evidence* to back it up!

I can understand those close to the issue in some way being upset, but as to all those who are supposed to be detached, it’s like they didn’t pay attention to the known facts of the case. I know, I know, they’re pushing an agenda, but it makes them look dumb.
In the dark, I wonder if he could even tell he was black? On the 911 recording, Z did say "I think he is black."
Aside, this journalist is making an assumption that has been on the news is true, which has been a problem in this case.
