Radio host offers Trayvon Martin’s friend, Rachel Jeantel, full ride to black college of her choice
The Daily Caller ^ | 16 Jul 2013 | Chuck Ross

On his radio program Tuesday, radio host Tom Joyner announced that he would fully pay for Rachel Jeantel to attend a historically black college or university of her choice.

Jeantel is the friend of Trayvon Martin who was the last person to speak to him before his February 2012 death and the star witness in the trial against George Zimmerman.

Joyner told Jeantel on his radio program early Tuesday, “if you want to graduate from high school, and go to an HBCU…if you want to do that, I want to help you do that.”

Jeantel is currently 19 years old and is about to enter her senior year of high school in Miami. She’s scheduled to graduate next spring, at the age of 20.

Joyner continued, “I will help you get tutors to get you out of high school, tutors to help you pass the SAT and I will give you a full ride scholarship to any HBCU you’d like.”

Jeantel thanked Joyner and said she was “shocked” by the offer.

She also said that she’d like to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Reached for comment, the president of the National Association For Equal Opportunity in Education — the non-profit umbrella organization for America’s HBCU’s — released a statement to the Daily Caller, applauding the news.

“This generous offer typifies Dr. Tom Joyner,” Lezli Baskerville told TheDC.

“An HBCU would be an ideal environment in which Ms. Jeantel could realize her educational aspirations because of their academic excellence and signature protective, supportive, nurturing environments,” Baskerville continued.

Baskerville said that Jeantel has been “pilloried and ridiculed in the national media.”

At an HBCU, Baskerville explained, “Ms. Jeantel will be able to realize her educational aspirations in a welcoming and supportive environment.”

I doubt that she could successfully complete any 4 year college degree in less than 20 years, even with “token status” ... might want to plan funding for quite a few years more than 4!!!!!!

Sorry, I teach at a university. I can’t imagine any university admitting that fool.”””

Didn’t a Girl from Texas take a case about admission to college all the way to the Supreme court & she won?

How could ANY college or university anywhere in the USA possibly accept this person—no matter who is willing to pay the tuition?

She is 19 years old and she cannot read or write anything except printing!!!!

She had to have a friend of hers WRITE out her statement about the night of the event—and then SHE could NOT read that statement in court-—because she CANNOT READ CURSIVE!!!!

I think I learned to WRITE in about 5th grade.

What a joke!!

Wait until she finished HS? Why not have her complete a remedial course in elementary education. If she cannot read cursive, then she is not literate. She needs to repeat grades 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,9, 10, 11, and 12 before she can consider going to college.

I actually feel sorry for her. Although she may not be the brightest bulb around, I am confident she is not as dumb as she appeared on the witness stand. Her lack of communication skills is a testament to a failed school system.

Do we need another illiterate "community activist?"
We already have Obama, Jessie Jackass and Al Sharpie.

But there are more serious roadblocks ahead.
I assume even Black colleges require high school graduates to be authentic graduates, satisfying all the requirements of graduation; even if she may be 27 at the time.
The other, is that it might be the unkindest cut of all. A liberal terminally humiliating a helpless young woman, unable to deal with her role in society through no fault of her own.

Perhaps a better plan would be to petition Hussein Obama's Alma Matter to award Rachel an honorary Degree. Everybody wins, and she could have her own talk show on BEN or Oprah's channel.

I have no problem admitting that I don't know everything. But I do know that competent journalism demands not introducing unfamiliar terms in a story that haven't been previously defined in the story.

What is HBCU?

That the court accepted that is frightening. Since she couldn't read what she dictated, and she can't possibly remember the exact wording of her original dictation, that statement or letter should not be admissible for ANYTHING.

"Yeah, that's what I said," is the most likely answer if she is asked.
One missing word or one extra, can change the total meaning of a statement.
