Law enforcement officers spent three days searching for 6-year-old Ahlittia North, only to find her decomposing body wrapped in her brown and plaid comforter and stuffed into a green trash bin just feet from the Harvey apartment where she lived. The heart-wrenching discovery early Tuesday morning now fuels the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office's latest search, the hunt for Ahlittia's killer.
Sheriff Newell Normand confirmed that investigators are working to obtain a first-degree murder arrest warrant for Matthew Flugence, 20, of Harvey, the nephew of Ahlittia's stepfather. Investigators have arrested Flugence's brother, Russell Flugence, 21, and booked him with obstruction of justice in the case.
"We are satisfied that Russell had information about this particular crime that he did not come forward with," Normand said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. "He revealed to us some circumstances that may implicate Matthew in the murder of Ahlittia North."
Authorities also revealed that the little girl was stabbed to death. The fatal injuries were two deep cuts on the side of her neck, according to Jefferson Parish coroner Gerry Cvitanovich. The wounds went through the cartilage in her spine to the bone. "That's a very aggressive stab wound," he said.
Ahlittia's mother, Lisa North, 20, said she was shocked to learn that her husband's nephew is suspected in her daughter's death. Matthew Flugence had frequently babysat for Ahlittia and often stayed with North and her husband, Albert Hill, 46.
"I don't understand the reason," she said Tuesday evening. "To say, 'I'm just going to kill your daughter?' I don't understand."

Normand said detectives discovered Flugence's connection to the family as well as an outstanding arrest warrant on a charge of sexual battery of an 11-year-old Harvey girl. That case is not related to Ahlittia's death, authorities said, but officers wanted to talk with him to see if he had any relevant information
Al and Jessie where are you?
Still, RIP little one.
I see they were real concerned serving the warrant for sexual battery of the 11 year old. Good on ‘em for .. oh wait, no. Never mind. They must not have had enough man power.
Matthew Flugence looks like a White Hispanic to me.
Poor little girl. I hope there is a special place in Heaven for her.
And a very warm one elsewhere for her murderer.
It’s Amish on Amish crime, there is no money in it...
If Obama had a son...
The stepfather was 46....
Black on black. No race baiting to be gained. Race hustlers moving along.
The nephew don’t fall far from the tree.
Clearly a creepy ass-cracker. Or creepy-ass cracker. Or whatever it is...
Only a total animal devoid of human feelings could kill a little six yo kid, girl or boy. What a little cutie and now she is gone forever. Makes you want to torture the SOB who did it.
Sometimes it seems that half the population down here has an outstanding warrant for something or another. If you take care of your outstanding warrant you better carry the papers with you or your liable to be rearrested for the same warrant.
Women and stupid boyfriends Oy vey. Just saw a group at the supermarket. The kids are in misery hell and the guy is so disinterested bordering on homicidal
What is up w the moms? Happens in every group
What a beautiful little girl. Wonder if the media is going to focus on this murder? This is more outrageous than the TM-GZ case. This is truly an innocent little girl. RIP in the arms of Jesus little one!
Poor child. RIP.
Rest in peace, little one.
This is Louisiana. He will get the death penalty. Unless he pleads out.
Such a beautiful child, may she RIP
Not for nothing, but is it really only us radical right-wingers who care when a little black child is killed?
Such a cute little girl, RIP little one, you didn’t deserve to die that way, or in any way for a long long time.
Prayers for her mom, she’s got to live with this.
Eric Holder and our President could not care less.
