RENO (AP) A young man who bought a handgun from a Reno police sergeant was adjudicated as mentally ill by a judge and prohibited from purchasing a weapon, but his name was never entered into a background check system because of a coding error, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported Tuesday.
Although background checks are not required for private gun sales, a coding error by the Washoe County clerks office prevented his name from being entered into state and federal databases, the Gazette-Journal (http://on.rgj.com/13gYX0L ) reported Tuesday. That means the 19-year-old would not have been flagged even if a background check had been conducted.
The clerks office is now auditing its records, the newspaper said.
The case is fueling ongoing debate in Nevada over gun control after the Democrat-controlled Legislature passed a bill this year requiring background checks for all gun purchase. SB221 was vetoed by Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval, who said the measure would erode Nevadans Second Amendment rights.

Just as long as they don’t let the mentally unstable Dingy Harry have a gun, things should be OK.
They ran the story 3 consecutive days on the front page of the Reno gazette urinal. I thought (and I could be wrong) that persons under 21 were prohibited from buying handguns. The police officer should have known this (if I’m correct) and should be disciplined regardless of the persons mental capacity. If he’s prohibited from possession due to his mental incapacity then mark kelley-giffords wife should also be prohibited. Regardless of the fact that her incapacity was no fault of her own.
As an aside, driving home a while ago on Virginia St there were some asshats near the bridge over the Truckee holding “we are trayvon” signs. One even had on a V for Vendetta mask. I gave them 2 thumbs down. They didn’t like that. TFB!
The government has shown itself to be incompetent in nearly everything it does. Why should it be any better at running a do-not-sell-to list?
I forgot to ask redreno, how you doin’? We’re doin’ good over here in Golden Valley. Lovin’ life.
Look at all the “mentally unstable” morons we have in the District of Corruption running the country and nobody is complaining. Being “mentally unstable” is the “new norm” in the ObamaNation.
[ That means the 19-year-old would not have been flagged even if a background check had been conducted. ]
AND THAT MEANS (gotta read between the lines, folks) that the Police Sergeant sold it to someone he knew nothing about, and didn’t bother with a background check.
I thought that the “LAW” was trying to tell us that such a thing is unacceptable ?
Why is it that those who uphold the law for others, cannot even set a good example themselves?
Amen to that.
My understanding is that, due to the HIPPA laws, a person’s mental health history isn’t included in the background check anyway. It’s the reason that the killers in Tuscon, Virginia Tech and the Aurora movie theater were all subjected to background checks and they all passed them.
No longer true.
Obama usurped that with one of his executive orders after Sandy Hook.
Judging by the headline I thought it was probably referring to Harry Reid.
Her is the problem with the new EO.
It allows GPs PA’s and Nurses to make the call of a mental health professional.
So you get some hoplophobe nurse and bang! you are on the list.
:o) Why no two center digits UP?
