The Chicago city council voted unanimously on Wednesday to toughen its existing ban on assault weapons by adding more types of guns to the banned list and imposing stiffer fines for violations of the law.
The nation's third-largest city is facing a wave of gang-related gun violence. Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago police have struggled to reverse the trend that has persisted even after they put more police on patrol in some neighborhoods.
While official statistics show Chicago's murder rate has subsided somewhat from last year, injuries and deaths are common from gun violence, particularly in predominantly African-American and Hispanic neighborhoods. Violence is usually higher during the summer when the weather is warmer.
Chicago acted quickly on gun control to beat a deadline set by the state of Illinois for local governments to set tougher gun laws before a state law allowing the carrying of concealed weapons goes into effect.
Emanuel said the tougher laws would improve public safety, but others questioned whether the laws will be effective.

Let’s try this: put a ring of steel around every major city where the ‘urban yutes’ and welfare queens are running rampant. Airdrop in a butt-load of AKs and let them finish each other off. Wait till the shooting stops. Repeat as needed.
Marx Dayton wouldn’t know a good gun law even if it came in a pill form.
I would be interested in knowing what the breakdown is; how many thugs versus how many law abiding citizens who could benefit from having a CCW AND would entertain having one.
Call me a pessimist, but I don’t think there are too many “innocent” bystanders who just didn’t have the means to protect themselves...
That's the only demographic that big city liberal gun-grabbers still receive positive response on the issue of gun control from anymore: Elderly black women. Church hats.

I don’t think ‘aggrieved America’ has any real idea of how sick and tired the rest of us are with their bravo Sierra.
Include me in that group. In fact, I'd like to see some evidence in, say, a year. And if the law has NOT proven effective (and I'm betting it won't), then it sunsets and Mayor Rahm can look for some other way to infringe on the Constitution.
I’ve had the same thought. Only I’d drop a weapons cache at one end of town, and a food stash at the other. Then open the cages and let the animals fight.
omg the criminals are really going to be in trouble now. they are really scared about new banned guns now.
you know how scared all the murder and assault laws have stopped them all from violence, these gun restrictions will scare them’so much more than murder and assault laws do.
Me thinks Chicago had better take a closer look at their illegal drug problem. That is the root of the killings.
