ENGLEWOOD
A pit bull was killed when a police officer was forced to fire his gun in defense this morning.
The officer was responding to an assault at 1026 Merrywood Drive around 5:30 a.m. after a woman called in reference to an altercation with a man at his home, Englewood Sgt. Mike Lang said.
The woman does not live at the house, Lang said. She reportedly left but forgot to retrieve her vehicles keys, and the man, identified as 30-year-old Daryn Evans, would not return them, Lang said.
Officers attempted to make contact with Evans in an effort to obtain the womans keys, but he was uncooperative for about an hour and a half. Eventually he threw the keys out the door, which is when the pit bull escaped, charging at officers, Lang said.
Police fired around a half-dozen shots, witnesses said.
Lang said there are several elements officers must look at before discharging a weapon. In this case, the dog posed an immediate threat and the backdrop of the situation was safe enough for the officer to fire his weapon.
The woman suffered minor injuries during the altercation inside the home, Lang said. Evans was taken into custody around 6:50 a.m. and is charged with assault.
Cops can usually take out a Basset Hound or a Poodle with 2 rounds, but Pits are tougher.
I have no sympathy for the dog’s owner or the dog in this case.
Here we have a case of someone trying to retreat and being prevented from doing so. Had the perp given her the keys he would still have his freedom and his dog.
An unrestrained violent pitbull and wife abuse. What could go wrong?
It’s pretty rotten that the guy would do that to his dog.
The article makes it sound like the dog charged out the open door when given the opportunity to get loose. It didn’t sound intentional to me.
Dog of Peace (tm) Alert!
Looks like a legit case of self defense to me.
In this case I must support the officer.
I would have done the same thing, and I love dogs more than anything.

Lol that is pretty ironic, I have to say.
He intended to keep the woman’s keys from her, his acting the jack-azz caused it. So yeah, I blame him.
Breed hater Alert!
Relax!!
It was actually a Sheltie, but Pit Bull sounds much more threatening.
What is it with certain people and impulse control?
Are you being facetious?
If it sounds outrageous, and I've said it, it's probably meant in jest.
