The Argentinean Popes first international trip to Rio de Janeiro to celebrate World Youth Day (22-29 July) is less than a week away. This will be the first time he returns to his homeland, Latin America, since his election to the pontificate.
Unlike his predecessors, the Pope will not be using the Popemobile to get around. Francis wants to have direct contact with as many people as possible. He will be using a covered sedan or the open-top jeep he uses during his Wednesday General Audiences to get around Rio de Janeiro, where he will be spending most of his time. Francis decision is consistent with the way he does things during the General Audiences in St. Peters Square. He is happiest when he is in touch with his surroundings, Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi said.
For the time being, no meeting with paedophilia victims is expected to take place. This type of meeting is held in places where the problem is really felt, so bishops ask for it in very serious situations. Whenever there have been requests for such meetings, the Pope has always agreed to them but he hasnt received any so far.
Francis has also introduced another change to the traditional papal flight schedule: no press conference is going to be held during the long flight to Rio de Janeiro, which usually involves Lombardi collecting and preparing questions. The Pope told me he wants the on-flight interview session with journalists to be done a little differently: the Pope will meet and speak to each journalist individually. Its definitely going to be an interesting, wide-ranging and cordial meeting but it wont follow the usual question and answer pattern.
