The burning heart of liberal activism and indignation this summer can be found, of all places, in the charming capital city of the Tar Heel State. On Monday, for the 11th week in a row, thousands of protesters descended on the copper-domed Capitol denouncing the policies of a Republican Party that for the first time since Reconstruction controls North Carolina´s governorship and legislature. Some 800 agitators have been arrested for disrupting the legislature. By all accounts, these "Moral Monday" rallies, though peaceful, are growing in size and volume. Well, there’s a reason that Cary (Raleigh’s biggest suburb) actually stands for “Containment Area for Relocated Yankees.” The Triangle is lousy with halfbacks and folks who were transferred down from up north when their employers moved to Research Triangle Park or elsewhere in the area.

The other problem is that while Raleigh/Wake County are very purple, the other two “points” of the Triangle—Durham/Durham County and Chapel Hell/Orange County—are two of the three most liberal places in the state (only Asheville even comes close). Chapel Hill is a hippy-dippy college town and Durham is a black-run black-racist hellhole where the main entertainment is the local yoots shooting each other over drug deals gone bad, when they aren’t assaulting white joggers on the trails. There’s a reason, as a former five-year resident of Durham, that I call the place Zimbabwe With a Ballpark.

The other day I came out of the grocery store to find some truck parked facing my car, and touching the bumper. I was bending over and looking to see if any damage was done when the guy who owned the truck came out. Man, did he have a belligerent attitude, and a New Yawk accent. He wanted to know what I was looking at, and when I told him, said, “I didn’t hurt your damn car, now shut the f-— up.”

My neighborhood in Red Hampshire is chock-full of relocated New Yorkers, and your description fits to a 'T'.

First of all...don't assume that all those Marxists gathering in Raleigh are North Carolinians.In fact,it's unlikely that the *majority* are.Just a hunch on my part.

Here in Texas, when the 'Rats were staging protests at the legislature against the anti-abortion bill, they advertised for protesters on Craig's List in Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston.

The deal was a $45/day rate, with a free busride to Austin and back.

That's the 'Rat version of "grass roots spontaneity".
