A bill pending in a legislative committee would make Ohio the latest state with a stand-your-ground law, even as rallies are planned in Toledo and across the nation today to protest last weeks acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin.
Buried in House Bill 203, the latest effort to loosen restrictions on the carrying of concealed handguns, is a provision that would broaden Ohio law that presumes someone acted in self defense if he feels he or family members are in imminent danger and shoots an intruder in his home or car.
It is a mistake to require a person to turn their back on their assailant to try and flee, the bills sponsor, Rep. Terry Johnson (R., McDermott), said during a June hearing. The Republican-controlled General Assembly has since recessed for the summer and wont take up the measure until September at the earliest.
If I was out with my family, and we were attacked, I would want to be able to defend them, said Dr. Johnson, a Cincinnati-area physician. The person will still have to show in a court of law that they were acting in self defense, and we are making no changes to the threshold a person has to meet to demonstrate self defense in a court of law.
The legislation would expand the circumstances under which lawful Ohio gun-owners have no legal duty to retreat when assaulted before using potentially deadly force to defend themselves to any place that the person lawfully has a right to be.
Jonathan Fulkerson, deputy chief counsel for Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, offered as examples of exceptions burglars or intruders on private property as well as persons prohibited from being in certain places by court-issued protection orders.

That’s what you call “pushback” right there.
this is gonna be good
Sometimes, I’m really proud to be a Buckeye. I think we probably have more CCW permits per square mile here than anywhere else in America. Maybe.
More proof of the Law of Unintended Consequences.
the media needs to stop linking SYG with Traydown.... but they have their orders
Thats what you call pushback right there.
The critical factor isn't President You Didn't Build That, national champion gun salesman year after year, but the American people: we're the people who've been voting all along with our dollars and telephone calls and supporting paper work for concealed carry permits and hoarded ammunition and more telephone calls to state and local politicians.
lol @ traydown
I am going to keep that one
This is truly cynical and truly evil.
I don't know why anyone considers President Obama "a nice guy". He's evil.
Fortunately, we have just such a law here in Wisconsin.
If 0bama and his boy Holder don't like it, then it has to be good for Freedom!
I live in the Cleveland area, (albeit a more affluent suburb), and after moving here from Columbus I called my local Police Department to gauge their views on open carry, which is legal in the state of Ohio.
The officer sounded incredulous at the very notion of my openly carrying in my city, and while acknowledging that it was “legal” suggested there would be many interactions with the Police Department who would have to respond to the calls they would no doubt receive by locals were I to carry openly.
He added, that if I were to so much as put my hand on my weapon during these interactions with LEOs, I would be shot.
As a kid growing up in Iowa, I used to walk the streets of my town heading to the outskirts with my loaded .22 rifle. Nobody said anything but, “Be safe” and that would include the cops, who would simply ask, “What are you going to shoot?” The only thing they ever ordered me to do was to, “Make sure your safety is on in town.”
But then, in the 70s kids could be trusted with a loaded .22. Today as an adult man, I risk being shot for doing that which I did as a child.
I cannot see any other reason for Eric Holder and crew for coming out against SYG but to give "his people" a chance to take down a home owner. Holder has got to be anticipating more rioting and looting. Wonder why that is?
I believe his intent is much more sinister. By repealing "no duty to retreat" laws, he means to create a submissive society. It will take a generation or more, but the end game is a nation of people who are helpless and can only run in fear or submit.
Don’t forget The One’s promise to punish his enemies and take revenge. It’s not about guns or people getting killed; it’s about punishing gun owners who aren’t his supporters. Period.

You're right, Spok.
I remember regularly bringing my shotgun to school back in the 80s. one of the clubs I was in would go fox hunting after school. This was rural Ohio mind you. The town next to us just passed a local ordinance that authorized custodians to carry a concealed weapon. This was a couple of weeks after Sandy Hook mind you. There’s a big difference between rural Ohio and bug city urban Ohio as I’m sure you know. The cops in rural Ohio would look at open carry much differently than the cops in any of our big cities. I had thought about organizing an open carry “club” but the fact is, I think it best to keep our guns under our shirts for the time being and then gradually advance our cause from there. I’m afraid that an open carry movement might harm the cause at this point.
