The Rise of the Warrior Cop
Wall Street Journal ^ | July 20, 2013 | Radley Balko

Posted on 07/20/2013 8:27:24 AM PDT by Makana

On Jan. 4 of last year, a local narcotics strike force conducted a raid on the Ogden, Utah, home of Matthew David Stewart at 8:40 p.m. The 12 officers were acting on a tip from Mr. Stewart's former girlfriend, who said that he was growing marijuana in his basement. Mr. Stewart awoke, naked, to the sound of a battering ram taking down his door. Thinking that he was being invaded by criminals, as he later claimed, he grabbed his 9-millimeter Beretta pistol. himself in his jail cell. Sean McCabe The police say that they knocked and identified themselves, though Mr. Stewart and his neighbors said they heard no such announcement. Mr. Stewart fired 31 rounds, the police more than 250. Six of the officers were wounded, and Officer Jared Francom was killed. Mr. Stewart himself was shot twice before he was arrested. He was charged with several crimes, including the murder of Officer Francom.

The police found 16 small marijuana plants in Mr. Stewart's basement. There was no evidence that Mr. Stewart, a U.S. military veteran with no prior criminal record, was selling marijuana. Mr. Stewart's father said that his son suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and may have smoked the marijuana to self-medicate.

Yesterday, I chatted with an Environmental officer at a boat ramp. He was dressed in full BDU with bloused jump boots. We were in an upscale resort town.

Yes , we need a tactical response team, trained and equipped. But we don't need them in every Mayberry in the country. If you give boys toys, they WILL play with them.

When private industry and manufacturing jobs are evaporated, everybody has to go work for the state.

The state workers have to justify their paycheck by doing unto the private sector folks.

State workers get bored and do crazy stuff.

That is the biggest driver of this whole concept. You give them toys.

Talk of agencies getting MRAPS. Well, at some point agencies will have them, if they don’t already. And one day the chief will wonder why in the hell that thing is taking up space and resources, when it isn’t used very often. Guess what, that thing will be used for anything and everything they can think of from that point on.

Having been a cop and having worked narcotics and on a fugitive unit, I’ve learned one thing. There is a time and place for all that stuff. But, a very very large majority of it can be accomplished with a simple knock on the door or a traffic stop.

How do you defend against overwhelming force?

A good defense is a good offense. Take the fight to where they live. They have to sleep sometime.

“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.” ― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago

It is getting harder and harder to “chat” with local cops.
When was the last time you had a cop walk by you in a store or gas station who nodded and said “Good morning”? Doesn't happen anymore does it>

Because for years, the job of law enforcement has turned into a “US vs THEM” game. It is no longer the cop on the beat, getting to know the people in the neighborhood.

IE, in most departments across the country they look at the officers stats(arrests, tickets, etc). If the officer is low, then he/she gets called to the carpet or disciplined. But, what if they’re doing such a good job patrolling their beat, that they don’t have to make arrests or write tickets and they’re are respected by the people in the neighborhood. For many in the command structure that isn’t acceptable. They have to be producing something(arrests, tickets).

The officers are taught to have an adversarial attitude toward the public. And then, you give them “Big Boy Toys”. Bad recipe.

And that is where it just gets silly. I'm reminded of our small town department breaking up a high-schooler pot party. The trim kids scattered leaving the rotund battle ready goon squad huffing and puffing waaayyyyy in the rear.

Noooo!

This is what Liberals want. Cops tend to be K-selected Warriors just like us. In nature, where both K-selected and r-selected psychologies exist in the same species/population, the r-strategists are programmed to actually get the K-strategists to fight with each other, to kill them back. While the K-strategists fight, the r’s hide until it is over, or in some species, they even alter their appearance to look like females (such as in the Australian Giant Cuttle fish, where the r-males are known as transvestite cuttlefish).

Liberals are our species’ r-strategists, and they are employing this strategy here. This is instinctual, and I will give you a way to see this clearly.

Find one Liberal. Tell him that if the Feds come for your guns, you will shoot it out with the Feds, and so will every other gun owner. The Lib will love it, because that is what they want. Whether you die, or a cop dies, it is all the same to the Libs. Let there be one big war, with cops and Conservatives killing each other back while the Libs hide, and the Lib will be in heaven.

Now find another Lib, and when the subject comes up, tell him if the Feds come for your guns, you’ll give them to the Feds. But that night, you’ll get more guns, grab the names and home addresses of a few zero contributors off the FEC donation records database, and go to their homes, in the middle of the night, and take them out. Tell him, when the next revolution comes, every gun owner is going to do that. Tell them they won’t fight the government, they’ll just target every Liberal campaign contributor. Tell him that the last revolution only saw 3% of the population fighting the British. Tell him 3% of our population is about 10 million people. Tell them if each of those 10 million fighters took out one unarmed/helpless Obot a day on average, in just 6.5 days, all 65 million registered democrats would be gone. Tell him with a smile you know a few guys who would be way above that average, and then laugh.

I don’t endorse that, and would never support it myself, or take part in such a revolution, to be clear. But if you said it to a Lib, you would see their face go white. They know, instinctually, their goal is to see K-strategists fight. Evil Cops/Military/and Feds are supposed to shoot it out with those mean Conservatives. That is the natural order, and it is good. If you pose the possibility of the K-strategists seeking out the unarmed and helpless r-strategists, and killing them in their homes in the dark of night, they will freak inside, instinctually.

This is why r/K Theory in evolutionary ecology is so powerful in politics. It can help us mold our rhetoric to avoid the mistakes which can really screw things up. Keep telling everyone we will strike out at the cops if they come for our guns, and Libs will speed their efforts to send cops to our doors, because that is what they are programmed to do. Alter the rhetoric, to make the Libs see a different Darwinian outcome, and they will alter their behavior, and the entire revolutionary scenario could easily be avoided – With Words.

Check my profile page or my website for the rundown on r/K Theory, and its relation to politics and strategy.

I've already tested this in a more safe manner.

I let 'em know that I will give anonymous tips to the police that their kids are dealing drugs to other kids.

Yep, their faces go white, for two reasons, first they know that they and their kids (who may be inexperienced enough to sass or make a move) will face the LEO's intended for YOUR door, and second they know their kids probably ARE fooling around with drug and are dead meat.

They get really mad about this, even though their own cops encourage us good guy anonymous tipsters, go figure.

“In 2006, 38-year-old optometrist Sal Culosi was shot and killed by a Fairfax County, Va., SWAT officer. The investigation began when an undercover detective overheard Mr. Culosi wagering on college football games with some buddies at a bar. The department sent a SWAT team after Mr. Culosi, who had no prior criminal record or any history of violence. As the SWAT team descended, one officer fired a single bullet that pierced Mr. Culosi’s heart.”

What the hell! People can’t even make a little wager with their buddies on a football without a SWAT team killing them??? We have a full fledged police state, where everyone has to live in fear of the police. And marijuana needs to be legalized. The war on drugs has been one of the biggest boondoggles and failures in history.

I hope you enjoy the book. I feel it has a lot if interesting info documented in it, and the idea, if accepted could help a lot as we head into this storm.

“Yep, their faces go white, for two reasons, first they know that they and their kids (who may be inexperienced enough to sass or make a move) will face the LEO’s intended for YOUR door, and second they know their kids probably ARE fooling around with drug and are dead meat... They get really mad about this, even though their own cops encourage us good guy anonymous tipsters, go figure.”

All of Liberalism is about foisting disadvantage on others, behind their backs, while avoiding any consequence. Posit them enduring consequnces (especially Darwinian consequences), and they will respond phsyiologically, with blood pressure drops, panic attacks, heart rate changes, and the works. What amazes me is how powerful words are with them, and how little we make use of this.

I am kinda hopeful that if I can spread r/K, it will carry with it the utility of that kind of rhetoric. Now it is portrayed as unintellectual and crude. But if we can get it portrayed as a mark of a brilliant understanding of the defective Liberal psychology, and get it used more widely and proudly, things could head back in a more K-direction very quickly.

He got 6 hits (one fatal) with 31 rounds, they fired off 250 and got two hits?

The LAPD who put 102 bullet holes in a Tacoma pickup wounded one of the occupants with two hits. Sounds like a lot of agencies need some range time and training.

Convo usually starts with the lib saying “I’m going to enjoy watching the law eradicate you gun nuts”

My reply is typically, “Don’t you believe that citizens should have the right to defend themselves?”

Because it is an uncomfortable question they shift gears with, “When TSHIF the cops and the military are gonna hunt you down like the rabid dogs you are, and I’m gonna point you out to them”.

This is where I say something like, “When TSHTF I won’t bother trying to fight with forces that are better outfitted than I. Instead, the chaos that ensues will give me cover to seek the retribution you’ve been begging for all these years. I know where you live - I know where your children go to school - I know where you work and hang out. I won’t go up against SWAT teams in MRAPS and auto weapons but I will eliminate as many of YOU as I feel like, on my timetable, at my discretion, and with complete impunity. The cops will be so busy putting down rioters and looters they won’t have time to bother with the likes of you. I’ll take your food, your shelter, and anything else I want. You won’t be needing it anymore.”

“You are the ones responsible for where we are today and as the old proverb goes, “They that sow the wind, shall reap the whirlwind”

It’s best done with a soft voice and a smile... ;-)

Conservatives are to blame for this to some degree.

We often talk about opposing big government while forgetting that a strong local government closely connected to the people is necessary.

The police power should understand that it answers to the people. When that power instead answers to authorities from distant places, abuse of police power has fewer consequences.

We should emphasize that we’re not against all government, just government that doesn’t get consent from the people governed.

The closer and more local rule making and governing are to the people, the fewer the abuses. In the limit this reduces to absolute self-government. Nothing could be more local than governing yourself, but government is necessary as people come together to interact. Local towns with mayors and a town hall are often enough to serve this purpose.

But the problem with many liberals is that they think they have a right to govern everyone everywhere. It’s not enough that they they be true-believers in their own ideology exercising control in their own towns and cities — they feel they have to force their ideology on everyone. They won’t be happy until everyone is living in their idea of utopia.

I've often advocated outward opening exterior doors.

People will complain that someone might might remove the door at the hinges. Fine. That takes much more time than a simple kick-in.

And kicked-in doors can often be quickly closed again, hiding most of the evidence that someone has entered.

Because for years, the job of law enforcement has turned into a “US vs THEM” game. It is no longer the cop on the beat, getting to know the people in the neighborhood.

Exactly. And history is full of governments that had some kind of military or law enforcement separating the peasants from the ruling class.

When you create a powerful, militarized, law enforcement system, and when their job relies on them finding things to write tickets or jail people over, it's a recipe for disaster.

A lot of the tinfoil types are worried about federal law enforcement, when the numbers of federal law enforcement are very low compared to the whole population. What the tinfoil types should be worried about is the local and state law enforcement, because that is who they will most likely come into contact with.
