Leftist scholars like Ignatiev, love to talk about "whiteness" as a social construct, that represents the value system of highly-educated upper-class white people. If you think of "whiteness" as a social construct, there are very few white people in America who are as "culturally white" as Barack Obama.
How many whites have a father who graduated with a Masters degree from Harvard, like Obama? How many whites have a mother with a PhD degree, like Obama? Obama has two Ivy League degrees of his own. Obama's white grandmother, who played a very important role in his upbringing, was a Vice-President of a bank. How many white freepers had a grandma who was a Vice-President of a bank? Obama also attended a very expensive majority-white Prep school, before he graduated from Columbia and Harvard, a school similar to the high-class Prep school that George W. Bush attended.

By Obama's "culturally-white standards", Zimmerman is a blue-collar worker. Zimmerman does not have a college degree. By the "culturally white" standards of Obama's upbringing, the majority of white Americans are rednecks.

By the way, I do not associate “whiteness” with “Ivy league degrees” as you say. Ivy League universities are “anti-white”. But I am using the same arguments that leftists use to define “whiteness”, to challenge Obama’s comparison of himself to Trayvon.

Stern was raised in Roosevelt Long Island, a 100% black neighborhood from the time he was a baby till the time he left for college. He said he use to get beat up daily at school for being white. Compare that to Obama raised in an all white neighborhood except for the 2 years in Indonesia, yet black people will call Stern a white Jew and Obama black.

The Democrats have a very strange versions of race. Sen. Elizabeth Warren can proclaim herself to be Native American without a shred of evidence of such heritage and worse still illegally use minority hiring to get preference and the liberals have no problem with this sham. George Zimmerman who undeniably has a racially mixed heritage and by the Democrat view of racial politics should be deemed Hispanic is deemed to be White. However Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio despite their Spanish speaking Cuban heritage are portrayed by Democrats as lily white Aryans.
