Broken Boulevard (what's wrong with this picture?)
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | 07/21/2013 | staff

A photograph by The Inquirer's Michael Bryant last week revealed most of what one needs to know about Philadelphia's Roosevelt Boulevard. The day after an alleged drag racer killed a woman and three children trying to cross the thoroughfare, it shows another woman clutching a child as she runs through traffic on the same stretch of road. The multilane Boulevard has exacted an inordinate pedestrian death toll for decades, and officials have promised to deal with it for almost as long. But as the photo illustrates, the road continues to encourage recklessness among drivers and pedestrians alike.

Sounds like the kind of nonsense that greedy plaintiff lawyers spout.

I don’t know anything about the area, but why in the photo is the woman not using a crosswalk?

Whats the matter?

Did this woman avoid using the stoplight and crosswalk a hundred feet down the road because the little guy in the pedestrian signal is white?

First of all, she’s not crossing in the crosswalk. Second of all, she’s crossing against the light. Maybe if people paid attention to the traffic laws, fewer people would get run over. Who knows what the situation was the night of the drag race. Presumably, drag racers would not obey traffic lights anyway.

officials still haven't done enough to ... discourage unsafe crossing, such as with fencing...

I knew it -- the critics claim it is somehow the transportation department's job to protect people from their own stupidity.

Just like dogs that like to chase cars, they are destined to get run over.

From the article, “The crash took place at North Second Street, where median walkways indicate a crossing despite the absence of traffic signals.”

Confusing. They marked the roadway with a crosswalk, but there are no traffic signals? So a pedestrian may be trying his best by staying in the crosswalk, but an upcoming car doesn’t have a signal or even a sign that there’s a walkway? Sounds like an accident waiting to happen, whether or not people are using the street for a drag strip.

Down there by that light, wouldn’t there be a crosswalk?

why in the photo is the woman not using a crosswalk?

Because she has been longing for a Mennella's chicken that crossed the road?

Roosevelt Blvd is US Route 1, a very major highway in an urban area. In that area there is a signed crosswalk at 4th Street and another 4-5 blocks or so away at Mascher Street.
At 2d Street or what would about 1st Street there is a concrete paved medium. The folks dash across Route 1 to save walking blocks out of their way. No excuse for the folks but that’s just the way it’s done there. Tough life when living in that area but you takes your chances.

LOL!

Liberals have been doing this to Blacks since the Civil War.

You don’t need a father to help raise your kids...........

You don’t need to obey the legal law, or even the moral law, go ahead and shoot that bastard who looked at your woman................

Who knows. I think under most state laws, traffic is supposed to yield to pedestrians at an unsignaled crosswalk. Back in Eugene the cops run sting ops at those crosswalks all the time and always write lots of tickets.

The Roosyvelt blvd is one piece of bada$$ road. Especially where it breaks into two inner and two outer lanes just south of Bensalem, and goes for miles like that through NE Philly.

And folks in their right mind would NEVER dream of crossing it without the light.

OH, BTW, the lights are only a Philly block apart. Not far.

Pedestrians are the most culpable group here. Especially a certain minority who think that sauntering across the street to watch drivers have to slam on the brakes, is funny.

Driven that road for years. Seen them do it.

When I was a kid my Mom would have told me to avoid crossing Roosevelt Boulevard. I would have obeyed.

Why must this be a government project?
