They already are but most FReepers are too busy sniping to tell you about it. A deal to buy the abandoned Packard plant is expected within days. In fact a lot of similar buys have been made since republicans took control of the state.

Detroit has the highest taxes in the state and that has to end.

A serious question: What is the solution?

Reduce welfare benefits below what you get for working for a living, for starters. Provide incentive to go back to work. When it is no longer a situation where you lose quality of life trying to work your way out of the welfare rat trap, people will have more incentive to do so. Raising minimum wages won't get that done, only reducing the welfare bennies (and associated programs).

You want a phone? Pay the bill. You want a nice place--rent/own it--and sell the abandoned homes cheaply enough that people can get in there and homestead them.

Either that, or stack the cleaned brick on pallets and haul them somewhere else and sell them.

We are a nation of dumbed-down half-wits who are engaged in selling “services” to each other.

I remember the early ballyhoo about a "service economy". I looked at a friend of mine and said "Are they nuts? We aren't going to get rich scrubbing each others' toilets!"

The DemonicRATS are killing the U.S. city by city. And we continue to fund dictatorships and banana republics to the tune of many billions of dollars. Obama should be impeached. Term limits set on ALL offices. And special penal colonies for those caught in government corruption.

Never in any story about the “bankruptcy” of Detroit does the author(s) mention the facts about liberals controlling Detroit for more than 70 years and every City in the US that is about to follow Detroit to the Federal bankruptcy Court is also controlled by liberals and the bankruptcy is the result of liberal (Obama) policies.

You beat me to it - when you look at the list of cities in danger of financial ruin, there's a common thread that links them all: decades of single-party Democrat rule.

The white people started leaving in 1960, and the trickle became a flood in 1967 during Detroit riots that killed 43 people. The white started fleeing to the suburbs in record numbers after that.

White leaving meant the tax base left. Whites leaving meant that poorly educated and dysfunctional "families" moved into those neighborhoods.

Add in union corruption, African-American race pimps getting rich off of the city, political corruption, massive welfare, and no tax base, what did people expect?

The same thing has happened and is happening to many major US cities, but Detroit was the worst.

It is easy to point fingers and mock Detroit, but the truth is that the rest of America is going down the exact same path that Detroit has gone down. Detroit just got there first.

The other cities that will go under will be cities with majority black residents.

The only way other cities will be dragged into 'hellhole' status is if Detroit is bailed out. If that happens cities will know they can be totally irresponsible and dump their problems and debt on responsible cities. Perverse incentives that prove corruption and graft 'work' will destroy the nation too. Detroit must NOT be bailed out.

Detroit's problem was the producers and responsible people packed up and left... and their beautiful homes and neighborhoods fell into the hands of takers... now it's all wasteland.

Liberal run city. Nothing in that list surprises me.

Love to see the “Michael & Me” documentary try to find Michael Moore and ask him why HE doesn’t do something to save Detroit - like pony up some of his own money.

Beautiful is right.

Read the description for this house:

http://www.trulia.com/property/1000176109-1500-Seminole-St-Detroit-MI-48214#photo-23

“This 1909 Built Louis Kamper-designed French Regency mansion sits on 3 lots, surrounded by lavish greenery and gardens. Chandelier over the grand staircase was a gift from Edsel Ford to the original owner, Cornelius Ray. Palladian windows, heavily ornamented marble fireplaces.”

Sad to say, but within 15 years it will probably be burned out and a target for the wrecking ball.

A serious question: What is the solution?

What is the solution for vast swathes of people that don't want to help themselves? All Sharpton and Jesse want to do is blame Whitey. My response to that BS comes from (gasp) Ayn Rand:

Reason is not automatic. Those who deny it cannot be conquered by it. Do not count on them. Leave them alone.

We can ignore reality, but we cannot ignore the consequences of ignoring reality.

Civil rights pimps willfully ignore reason and reality in the pursuit of filling their own pockets. That includes you, Mr. Tavis Smiley.

My solution, as a starter, is two-fold:

1. Mandatory basic education as a condition of receiving welfare.

2. Upon demonstrating basic literacy, hand them a copy of Dr. Joel Fuhrman's book, "Eat to Live". Going through life illiterate and obese is no way to live.

“This is what happens when you...” have the largest corporate tax rate in the WORLD.

No WONDER business does not wish to stay here; regulations, tax rates, EPA, OSHA, etc.

The root problem: BIG (Fed/State/City) gov’t

We don't need a revolution. We need to elect people who represent our views. Then we need to take on voter fraud because that's one of the ways they win elections. Other than that spread the word... tell people to open their eyes. A third of all doctors are going to 'retire' because of 'ObamaCare' - tell people now what to expect. Then when the horrors start happening they'll be able to see them.

Our best shot is education... it's our strong suit. We're up against people who are corrupt - but not that smart. When we put our minds to the problem, we'll solve it... our way. Have faith - corruption will only take them so far...

Education won't work if the people don't want to be educated. This isn't just a race thing. Go to many a small rural town and you will the start of the same cycle. Once it becomes OK to be on welfare (non judgmental and all that) it becomes “dumb” to work hard and be smart.

After a few generations, the people are so locked in to that life that getting out is almost impossible. I have seen it where I grew up. Families that used to be struggling farmers become welfare recipients, and never dig out.

You're right on this. It's not just race. If the welfare system had offered more money to whites in the 60's and 70's we'd be in the same mess as poor blacks. Luckily for us most whites weren't seduced by the amounts being offered at the time.

We - like them - were damaged by marriages being undermined... fathers being tossed - then there was 'urban renewal' or neighborhood destruction. One horror after another.

Then the press moved into black neighborhood and picked out the 'leaders' - people who gave the most colorful quotes. We were blessed on that one too because since most reporters were white they were smart enough to know that a white rabble rouser was not the right person to represent 'white sensibilities'. They didn't understand that about blacks. Notice how few working class blacks came out for the 'Trayvon' protest? Working people of all races have a sense of who the gang bangers are... We were luckier... still our families are responding to the incentives... perverse incentives... someone has to stop liberal ideas from destroying all of us.
