Skip to comments.Rep. Bob Goodlatte floats pathway to legalization
Posted on 07/23/2013 7:20:08 AM PDT by onyx
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte recently threw a curveball into the immigration debate by floating what has been anathema to House Republicans a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
The Virginia Republicans idea: legalize the 11 million undocumented immigrants and allow them to apply for citizenship using ways that already exist including marriage to a U.S. citizen or sponsorship by another relative or an employer.
But the chairmans July 11 comments have piqued interest among immigration advocates. Reformers want to hear more about what the powerful chairman is thinking. Many are encouraged that Goodlatte is seeking solutions for undocumented immigrants. But others note that Goodlattes proposal could be legally unworkable.
Are they trying to create space for a Republican version of legalization with a citizenship option for some but not all? Or are they trying to pretend that they want a solution as they gear up to get to no? said Frank Sharry, the executive director of the pro-reform group Americas Voice. I genuinely dont know.

Agree use laws that already exist.
Change is bad must be punished.
The only legalization I want is for marijuana!
Enforce what’s already on the books.
The problem is not that our immigration laws are bad, we have just about the same laws as every other country
The problem is we did not ENFORCE THEM for 40 years
So... you have whole families here who are technically illegal but Mexico is not and has never been their home.
So, whazt do you do?
I would be for a guest worker REGISTRATION program- everyone working here must register (so we know who the heck is here)
NO CITIZENSHIP- NO VOTING
Then, any employer who hires someone NOT registered (totally illegal) gets MANDATORY 10 year jail term.
That alone would fix all the problems
I agree, no new bills. The thought of “legitimization” of illegal immigrants, is actually a bending of national law.
I would prefer a repeal of any federal law that grants any illegal immigrant ANYTHING.
They do not belong here. They have demonstrated through their own actions, that they are NOT willing to assimilate, at all. They ‘require’ US to bend to their language, their customs and traditions.
I agree with nothing less “than forcing them off the cliffside by bayonet”. No matter where they came FROM, send them back!
BAD Latte . . .
I know of nobody in favor of any reform!
Not a soul.
The “pathway” should lead straight back to Mexico...
Seriously, do you know anyone in favor of pathways to citizenship?
Other nations do not tolerate situations like ours.
I was actually waiting for that!
Sounds like something you get at Starbucks, when the barrista starts slacking off.
I’ll take your word for it!
I haven’t had a sip of coffee since my first several years ago. I hated it.
Sometimes I think the only purpose of these articles is to repeat, over and over, the lie that there are 11 million illegals in this country instead of the 30-40 million that many informed citizens believe are here.
I also resent the use of that newly created number, when we know it’s 30 million or more.
What I what to know is if Jonny B. values his Speakership because; if they pass any form of pathway to citizenship, we will have a new speaker.
You’re right, and likely Nancy Pelosi.
My local news covered the meeting this moron had with his constituents. Some bused-in Mexican girl stood up and turned on the tears, sniveling that her people needed immigration reform so that they could “live a better life.”
Goodlatte just stood there with a stupid expression on his face, and the other constituents APPLAUDED her. That applause, coming from fellow central Virginians in this solidly red area of the state, made me ill.
“likely Nancy Pelosi”
Thats for that, now I need a black out. :)
UGH. That’s sick-ken-ning. Americans had better wise up fast. Our country is about to be handed over to foreigners who don’t give a damn about our Founders or our Constitution. We already have more than enough home grown, useless, lazy, idiots living off the labor and wealth created by others.
I really don’t understand how people can be so blind. The folks in that room were all middle-aged and older (well, from what I saw, anyway). They didn’t look stupid. I’m at a loss to explain it.
Later good lady. I’m off to eat and such.
use laws that already exist
What part did you miss?.
SOME enforcement, but not 100% - I knew illegals from living in Tucson, AZ. I volunteered to teach them at a high school class. Their parents lived here AND their grandparents.
I like Greg Gutfeld’s idea: Send the illegals to Detroit and let them rebuild the city.
...fellow central Virginians in this solidly red area of the state....
Can you be sure they weren’t brought in, as well?
In related news, citizens begin to float the idea of a primary race...
The insider politicians are determined to shove this down our throats.....
Anything that does not deport illegal aliens is Amnesty
This is just more Amnesty
Good point, and no, I cannot. In fact, I hope they were; the alternative is confounding.
Perhaps those people were brought in with her?
” I know of nobody in favor of any reform!
Not a soul.”
I know 2. ....out of many hundreds.
I think it's possible.
Here's my local paper's account of the meeting. Goodlatte is a true RINO squish.
“What I what to know is if Jonny B. values his Speakership because; if they pass any form of pathway to citizenship, we will have a new speaker.”
We don’t have time to worry about a new speaker. We need to scare this one!
In fact, I hope they were; the alternative is confounding.
I hope that is the explanation. But your area might be the victim of progs retiring there and bringing their troubling views with them.
I live on the Eastern Shore of MD, near a small town that has always been mostly conservative. But, now, they are being inundated with new residents who are progs from the Philthadelphia area and trying to change things to their way.
Liberals from the Northeast have helped changed Virginia from a red state to a blue one. The northern part of the state is completely overrun. Here in the central area, we're stubbornly holding our own, but I wonder for how long.
Good luck to you in withstanding the progressive onslaught on Virginia. Washington and Jefferson must be rolling in their graves in your beautiful state.
BTW, I can’t take credit for “Philthadelphia”. It’s a beautiful city, but the prog policies have brought the “philth”.
Bob (not so) Goodlatte is against that!
Goodlatte, Cantor, and Bonehead are playing right into their hands.
Thank you, Bigg Red. I really appreciate that. I dearly love my state, but it’s turning into something I don’t recognize.
“Philth” follows those locusts wherever they go.
Oh, Cantor...! I can’t stand the sound of his voice anymore. He gets switched off the TV screen as fast as Obama in this house.
