Move over Trayvon Martin.
Big Labor has a new favorite group of victims of social injustice - the teaching staff of Lewis County, West Virginia.
Citizens have been complaining to school board members about the “way teachers dress,” according to school board president Paul Derico.
As a result, the school board unanimously passed a dress code for teachers, banning blue jeans, faded jeans and shorts.
Of course the teachers union is not taking this grave injustice lying down. Union officials have threatened to sue the board.
"We're disappointed in the actions of the board. We don't believe it's in the best interest of the teachers of Lewis County. We think it's inconsistent with their statutory and constitutional rights. We're going to explore all of our legal actions when we get back and take the next steps appropriate," said union attorney Jeff Blaydes, according to WDTV.
This isn’t the first time a union has flipped over a school district’s requirement to have “professionals” actually dress the part.
Teachers in Hampton, New Hampshire slammed a similar proposed dress code last year, calling it “derogatory and condescending,” according to Superintendent Kathleen Murphy.
Seacoastonline.com reported at the time “several teachers are insulted such a policy exists, telling them blue jeans, sneakers, flip-flops and tank tops are off limits.”
It’s insulting and a violation of “constitutional rights” to expect the adults to dress a little better than the students?
Is this all the civil rights movement has to fight over now? The right to dress like beach bums?
Given their state’s national education ranking, you’d think they’d have more pressing concerns.
The school can and has proven their authority to “police” specific statements by teachers such as, “Hey big boy, wanna go to my place and have a tumble?”
Yet, when the teacher wants to where “Daisy Dukes” to class, well, that’s a violation of a fundamental “right of self expression”.
If a teacher wants respect in the classroom — both for authority and competency — they must “dress the part”.
If schools can ban students from wearing certain types of clothes - and they routinely do - then they can adopt a dress code for teachers.
exactly. They want respect as professionals, but want to wear their flip-flops to work. The parents of the children they teach know how to dress for professional work. They should do so as well.
Once again the unions expose themselves as destroyers of society. ... And if a society that allows the vermin into their midst tries to expel them, well, they bus in thousands of their agitator/thuggery to put a stop to that! We have a professional agitator-in-chief who knows just how to take that squalor to the nation.
Might as well, most of them dress like slobs anymore, anyway.
Back in the dark ages when I was in school, men teachers dress in suit jackets and slacks, no matter the weather. And, the women dressed in good dresses or modifies suits.
I remember the business teacher and how she filled a dress. I took typing and accounting because of that. Especially when she walked away.

I would have no problem if the adopted the proper golf attire covenants.
I graduated from HS in 1958. The male teachers all wore business suits and the women mostly the same. I see my 8th grade teacher fairly often, He went on from teaching to being a principal and laments all of the “changes” he’s seen over the length of his career. Today, he’s 84! There are so few of these people left, and they are a treasure. As for the bulk of my children’s “educators,” I wouldn’t walk a cross the street for the bulk of them, and don’t get me started on their children’s teachers. Folks, this is fundamentally where we lost the battle with Liberalism.
OK, the 2nd amendment covers arms. Which covers legs?
My work won’t let me wear shorts either! Or open toed shoes! Wah! My “rights” have been violated and I didn’t even know it!
Ok. So go find pics of the angry NEA/union rallies in the rust belt states and imagine those women in shorts. Too short shorts. That ride up.
