Trayvon Martinís Dad Adds Voice To Help Black Men, Boys (Congressional Hearing)
CBS Baltimore ^ | July 24, 2013

Posted on 07/25/2013 6:22:17 AM PDT by NotYourAverageDhimmi

WASHINGTON (AP) — Trayvon Martin’s father told a crowded Capitol Hill forum on Wednesday that “a statute or amendment” safeguarding young people against the type of circumstances that resulted in his son’s death would be a fitting legacy for his son.

“The question is, what can we do as parents, what can we do as African-American men, to assure our kids that you don’t have to be afraid to walk outside your house?” Tracy Martin asked during a forum convened by the Congressional Caucus on Black Men and Boys, one of several such caucuses comprised of House members who want to seek possible legislative responses on various issues.

Martin said he is dedicated to ensuring that depictions during the trial of George Zimmerman, the man who shot Trayvon dead but was acquitted, do not define his 17-year-old son. Trayvon was his hero, Martin said, and “to not be there in his time of need is real troublesome, not to be able to save my son’s life.”

Martin’s comments opened what was billed as the first gathering of the caucus, which was formed to focus attention on issues disproportionately affecting black men and boys, such as joblessness and racial profiling.

“I would like to see Trayvon Martin’s name attached to a statute or amendment that says you can’t just profile our children, shoot them … and say you were defending yourself,” Tracy Martin told the lawmakers and the standing-room-only crowd....

Former NAACP President Kweisi Mfume cited the cases of Emmitt Till, a 14-year-old boy killed in Mississippi in 1955, and Rodney King, whose 1991 beating by Los Angeles police was captured on video, as examples of a sad, cyclical history that have had an impact on black men and boys.

Until black "men and boys" stop defining themselves as inferior beings who require special consideration, there is no hope for them.

Uhhhhhh....how about you start by staying with the kid's baby momma and raise him together.

Let’s just pass a law that makes it a federal crime to use self defense when you are getting your head caved in on a sidewalk by a black man wearing a hoody.

That should do it.

A statute or amendment! Damn! Why didn't somebody think of that before!

All those wasted lives and all we needed was a statute or amendment.

I wonder if Trayon's "father" is confusing a statute with a statue.

“a statute or amendment”

Yes, something that combines the names Trayvon Martin and Charles Darwin...

As a rational black pastor told me. Men like Tracy Martin love their sons but not enough to be real fathers. They treat their sons like fighting dogs because of a twisted belief that making them tough and aggressive will keep them alive when the reality is that they never learn to walk away from confrontation.

Trayvon was his hero, Martin said, and “to not be there in his time of need is real troublesome, not to be able to save my son’s life.

Oh, it's okay. He understood that your relationship with your girlfriend was the most important thing to you ... just like he understood, when you and his mother separated, that each of you had to think about what was best for themselves.

No, but seriously, I hope it eats at your vitals until you understand that you ignored your responsibilities until "your hero" grew into the kind of person someone has to shoot in self defense. I hope you never get another comfortable night's sleep again.

Good Question. Unfortunately you are getting your answers from the wrong people. al, jessie etc.
Your son was found with burglary tools, contraband, weed kicked out of school, kicked out his mamas house, then sent to live with you, and you went out with your girl friend and left him.
What the HELL did you expect?
Now you blame everybody but yourself and his mama.
if anybody should have been charged it should have been you so called parents. . . . . . .

Discussion and solutions during the forum included ensuring that high-quality preschools are available to black children, changing minimum drug sentencing laws, and pursuing federal pre-emption of Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, which some have cited as justification for Zimmerman’s action.

This was it? This is what the Congressional Black Caucus and black scholars could come up with to curb massive black youth violence and criminality, to curb nearly three-quarters of black boys being raised in a home without a dad, and to curb the ghetto culture that has so many black boys dropping out of school and never desiring to be part of the mainstream. This complete lack of introspection is so sad and so pathetic. This community will continue to be a lost cause if they continue to refuse to look inward.

to not be there in his time of need is real troublesome

Instead of being at the house making sure the little angel stayed grounded, he was out with the girlfriend. When he came home and went to bed, it didn't concern him that the little angel hadn't been home for hours and his whereabouts were unknown. That sort of parenting is real troublesome.

Our time here in schoolhouse Earth is a pass or fail test.

Schoolhouse Earth seems to be a "weed out" school, like one of those ultra tough med or engineering schools that tries to weed out those who can't or won't keep up by giving them a demanding Freshman curriculum, that also prepares them for grad school.

If you want to, if you can figure out the curriculum, you'll pass and you go on to your future.

If not? Well...from what I've read, you don't want to go there.

Posted by another FReeper (apologies...I do not know who, I just grabbed the text) on a thread yesterday...

•The father who left his “at risk teen son” alone for the weekend so he could attend a convention.

•The father who refused to give police the passcodes/swipe codes to Trayvon’s phone and instead told the police on 2/28/12 to call his attorney.

•The father who lied about how his son got to Sanford.

•The father who falsified a sworn statement to FDLE investigators.

•The father who said he saw he last saw Trayvon at 8:00pm when in actuality Trayvon was shot at 7:17.

•The father who called juvenile hall and then the adult detention facility to find his son rather than police missing persons.

This is the “representative role model” that the black community emulates? No wonder it is imploding.

African men should teach their children to be polite, and treat people right. Teaching them not to steal, rape, beat people, murder people, or get into people’s faces would go a long way towards ending incidents like the one where Trayvon got himself killed. Be better fathers before it comes to that.

If black people are looking outside the black culture, towards laws that would make others more vulnerable to black criminals, they need to stop their nonsense, and start admitting the truth. The problem is with the black culture.
