Trayvon Martin’s Dad Adds Voice To Help Black Men, Boys (Congressional Hearing)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Trayvon Martin’s father told a crowded Capitol Hill forum on Wednesday that “a statute or amendment” safeguarding young people against the type of circumstances that resulted in his son’s death would be a fitting legacy for his son.

“The question is, what can we do as parents, what can we do as African-American men, to assure our kids that you don’t have to be afraid to walk outside your house?” Tracy Martin asked during a forum convened by the Congressional Caucus on Black Men and Boys, one of several such caucuses comprised of House members who want to seek possible legislative responses on various issues.

Martin said he is dedicated to ensuring that depictions during the trial of George Zimmerman, the man who shot Trayvon dead but was acquitted, do not define his 17-year-old son. Trayvon was his hero, Martin said, and “to not be there in his time of need is real troublesome, not to be able to save my son’s life.”

Martin’s comments opened what was billed as the first gathering of the caucus, which was formed to focus attention on issues disproportionately affecting black men and boys, such as joblessness and racial profiling.

“I would like to see Trayvon Martin’s name attached to a statute or amendment that says you can’t just profile our children, shoot them … and say you were defending yourself,” Tracy Martin told the lawmakers and the standing-room-only crowd....

Former NAACP President Kweisi Mfume cited the cases of Emmitt Till, a 14-year-old boy killed in Mississippi in 1955, and Rodney King, whose 1991 beating by Los Angeles police was captured on video, as examples of a sad, cyclical history that have had an impact on black men and boys.

Teach them not to be outside casing houses for burglary, in the dark, in the rain.

Until black "men and boys" stop defining themselves as inferior beings who require special consideration, there is no hope for them.

Policy is made by PC outliers, while the rotting carcass in the punch bowl is ignored.

Marry their mamas before you have sex with them.

90% of the problem solved.

teach them to walk up and say “hello” to the neighborhood watch, rather than attack and break their nose

Uhhhhhh....how about you start by staying with the kid's baby momma and raise him together.

Let’s just pass a law that makes it a federal crime to use self defense when you are getting your head caved in on a sidewalk by a black man wearing a hoody.

That should do it.

A statute or amendment! Damn! Why didn't somebody think of that before!

All those wasted lives and all we needed was a statute or amendment.

I wonder if Trayon's "father" is confusing a statute with a statue.

“a statute or amendment”

Yes, something that combines the names Trayvon Martin and Charles Darwin...

How about being a better father?

This kid was too young to be afraid.

You could try actually being a dad, rather than a “baby daddy”. That might be a good start.

Did he lie to Congress about the criminal path that his son was on — including wanting his gangbanger father to buy him a gun.

As a rational black pastor told me. Men like Tracy Martin love their sons but not enough to be real fathers. They treat their sons like fighting dogs because of a twisted belief that making them tough and aggressive will keep them alive when the reality is that they never learn to walk away from confrontation.

Advice from the jerk who blew fatherhood by not raising his kid to be a responsible human being instead of a nascient criminal.

I have had enough of this crap. This country is in serious trouble.
