TORONTO A former Ottawa jail guard who endured homophobic harassment at the poisoned workplace has been granted what a grievance board calls its largest-ever award for a human rights breach.
Robert Ranger worked at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre from 1998 to 2002, when he left because he said he couldnt take the taunts and gay slurs, eventually going on long-term disability.
The Grievance Settlement Board has ordered the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services to pay Ranger $98,000 in compensation.
That amount includes $45,000, which the board says in its decision is the largest amount it has ever awarded for breaching the Human Rights Code and the collective agreement.
The board found that Rangers main tormentor and his entourage taunted and humiliated Ranger and the employer did almost nothing to address the homophobic atmosphere in the jail.
Ranger is also suing the ministry, and a spokesman says it would be inappropriate for them to comment on the grievance board decision while the matter is still before the courts.
So, he blew the whistle did he?
I hate perverts, they just cause damage where ever they go.
Perhaps they don’t like suckups and brown nosers.
The Judge must be the first person to leave a hotel in the morning.
Women guards endure it. This guy can’t, what a pansy. Prisoners and criminals are always going to act like that.
Mr. Ranger’s first name was Robert, not Rump?
HIs middle name is Rump
You are a terrible person!
so from 1998 to 2002,he was fishing for a Dr to put him on long-term disability
Don’t forget to cry a lot, that’s worth another ten grand at least.
Let me get this straight.
In the Canadian workplace, a person is not free to express their views on homosexuality?
I don’t understand why the State should pay for the prisoners harassing a guard.
Every guard is subject to harassment, It’s part of the job.
If you are a Homo, it’s normal to take more abuse from people who are locked up and do not give a damn about you.
Where do I sign up? I’m not gay but for 98 large you can call me anything you want too.
If I got the money I could support FR for a year and have change.
Please donate do my distress. Taxpayer money accepted.
Words fail me. A prison guard cries into his pillow (no doubt while biting down on it) because the prisoners make fun of him for being a sissy, and he gets paid for not being enough of a man to ignore teasing? “Pathetic” doesn’t cover it.
You aren’t free to express those views in the United States.
Are they kidding? Why don’t they order the prisoners who taunted him to pay this? That would be “justice”. Making the taxpayers pay this sissy for his hurt feewings is preposterous.
“I dont understand why the State should pay for the prisoners harassing a guard.”
The article doesn’t identify who it actually is.
If it in fact were the prisoners, there’s really not a helluva lot anybody can do about it. What are you going to do to them; put them in jail?
