Rescued hikers drown inside vehicle leaving state park

A pair of hikers who had been rescued after getting lost in the fog and rain inside a Maine state park drowned on Tuesday night when their car plunged into the water off a boat launch as they were trying to leave.

Amy Stiner, 37, and Melissa Moyer, 38, were found dead inside a minivan in 20 feet of water about 175 feet from the boat ramp on the edge of Roque Bluffs State Park, the Washington County Sheriff's Department said. A dog, a pit bull mix who was with them, also drowned.

Officials say the women, who had just been returned to their vehicle by a game warden, took a wrong turn as they were driving away from the parking area.

"The end of the road becomes the boat landing and they just weren't familiar with it," Washington County Sheriff Donnie Smith told the Kennebec Journal. "It was foggy and rainy and they literally drove off the boat landing right into the water."(continued)

I was thinking the same thing. When it’s your time to go, it’s your time to go.

Reminds me of the stewardess from the Korean Airline crash in San Francisco, surviving the crash, surviving the cartwheel, surviving the fire, then being killed by the fire truck hitting her, rushing to the scene.

Both of them were probably thinking,...”Man, am I lucky today or what?” (BAMMM)(glug,glug,glug,glug...)

Going for a hike shouldn't be a death sentence. I'm so sorry for the both of them.

I am a veteran hiker and have seen a lot of newbies setting off for an adventure with little or no planning. Nature is a unforgiving mistress with very little margin for error.

For some reason those song lyrics just sprang into my head.

What a horrible thing to happen.

I swear people are not as careful as they used to be. I watch kids running around at full speed with no care or caution from their parents. I see drivers completely immersed in texting while there cars slow down or veer of to the side of the road. I see pedestrians crossing the road without looking for cars. I see people die from these things. It is not socially correct to point out anything bad. You must never caution another. You must never threaten them with the future.

I wash my hands.

the women haters like you

I love women - in small and short doses.

I was married to two of them - one for almost 30 years.

My daughter is a highly-educated, productive woman and agrees with me. She prefers the company of men. How refreshing.

“Sad, but Darwin Award candidates for sure.”

I’m sure you would be fine if this happened to your daughters and someone called them “Darwin Award” candidates.

People die all the time around here in Phoenix on short trials. Camelback mountain is well known to have claimed the occasional recreational hiker and it’s right in the middle of Scottsdale. Always a tragic thing. People are either physically unfit, don’t bring enough water or bad karma.

Worse is when they wander off into the superstition mountains in the summer without enough water. There are already crazies out there looking for gold and if you’re walking on their perceived claim or worse a drug trail, you are not likely to come back. Worst is when they simply don’t prepare like the Chinese tourist some years back. No water, no real clue and not enough communication skills to understand “y’all r gonna die like that....” Eventually they find you, but not until after significant weight loss, say...all of it.

This land will kill you. 4 years ago I took my family on a hike where we learned my wife was anemic to the point of passing out. Carried her 4 miles up a mountain trail out of a wild valley. Started around one, got out at sunset. I had one bottle of water left, a near thing. All I kept saying is that “we are all getting out of here.” I’ll remember that hike every time we prep for one now. My wife had her conditioned addressed and corrected and has no problems now. Boy did I win points that day! ; D

I had one that went down and filled her waders up in a 3-foot wide and deep trout stream.

Was she not wearing a belt to prevent quick water inflow?

Mount Washington has claimed at least 137 victims since 1849. It is called the most dangerous small mountain in the world. http://www.backpacker.com/october_08_americas_10_most_dangerous_hikes_mt_washington_nh/destinations/12622

I know a guy who got caught in snow storm on Mt. Washington when he was in his sixties. Not a pleasant experience, but he survived.

What gets me is it seems that the driver continued to drive without seeing what was ahead. It is the same problem in these multi-vehicle pileups that occur on freeways during fog. Why did she not pull over? Stop and look? Also, in fog, the surface of the water could look very similar to the road surface, especially at a boat ramp. Very sad.
