Why green? What does the green paint supposedly symbolize?

Could be generic vandalism using a random color, but this is the 0bama-nation we're talking about. Could have been done by greenies or hoodies. Additionally,

Green paint to Islam is like dog P-P on a fire hydrant. Example: the desecration of Joseph's Tomb.

I'm not sure what it is that makes so many people visit at night.

Many of the monuments are much more dramatic at night. Especially the Korean War and FDR memorials.

However, the biggest reason is probably the weather. DC is hot and humid this time of year. But, it's tolerable at night.
