WASHINGTON Since the beginning of his second term, President Obama has appointed campaign fundraisers, party allies and other political figures as ambassadors at a level that is now almost double what has prevailed in the last few administrations.
More than 56% of Obama's 41 second-term ambassadorial nominations have been political, compared with an average of about 30% for recent administrations, according to U.S. government figures compiled by the American Foreign Service Assn. Of the political nominees, at least half have had fundraising roles.
The trend has emerged as the nomination of Caroline Kennedy to be ambassador to Japan, announced Wednesday, could renew the debate about selecting political allies who may have little diplomatic or country-specific expertise.

The Japanese are going to think that we hate them!! Caroline is a STUPID VALLEY GIRL THAT CAN”T SPEAK ENGLISH WELL!!! Sorry, Japan.
How about little expertise in anything?
Trend insults our traditional allies! Caroline in dirt dumb.
At many posts, a career diplomat is the real power behind the throne. Usually it’s the Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM). All one can hope for is that any political appointee be sufficiently intelligent so as to not cause problems while on the sip and gossip circuit. Just show up to fly the flag, shake hands, smile, and arrange lucrative business deals for your buddies. The drones in the Consular Section will handle the rest.
Ridiculous...she’s a idiot
I’ll take: “Let’s screw all our allies by sending them the dumbest Representatives we have while we back stab them allying with other Communist Countries for a $1,000 Alex.”
Finally Brack recognizes genius. Here’s our best and brightest, Japan. It speaks volumes about the greatness of America.
“Kennedy, who swung her family’s crucial support to Obama during his 2008 primary fight with Hillary Rodham Clinton, is known as an intelligent, low-key woman who has never held a government post and has shunned the spotlight.”
The author is being incredibly kind. The few times I’ve heard her speak she sounded like she had an IQ of 80. I think the Japanese will be insulted and will take advantage of her naiveté.
This administration reminds me of medieval England with the slobbery appointments from sheer suckup and political machine style.
She never had to. Once Daddy died, she was labeled brilliant and fabulous for the rest of time.
Maybe CK is a big Sake fan? It’s in the genes.
But then, you know, she doesn't speak English either.
she was labeled brilliant and fabulous for the rest of time.
As was Hillary and every other liberal.
Let’s get this “genius” on Jeopardy and see how she fares...
1 - "has never held a government post"
That's because she got laughed out of her bid to be appointed NY Senator when people discovered she could not speak intelligible English
2 - "has shunned the spotlight"
Except for trying to wangle a job as Senator, sitting on various boards of directors, co-chair Obama's Vice Presidential Search Committee, campaigning for Obamma, giving a speech at his nomination and all the other things well connected democrats do to secure appointments to jobs like Ambassador to Japan for which they have no qualifications.
How do you say “ya know” in Japanese? And how long will it take Ms. Kennedy to learn it?
Trending stupid and stupider.
“What’s going on here? What? What? What?” —Captain Binghamton
No problem. The next GOP Administration will clear out all this Democrat dead wood, /sarc
No “l” in Japanese, so that would be more like “So soree”
Loses are led,
Viorets are brue,
I rive in Japan rong ago,
How bout you?
Caroline is sick of Ed and needs some distance so she called Barry and he’s sending her on an extended vacation to Japan for the next 3.5 years.
Using “you know” 142 times per interview will only endear her to the low information voters who comprise the Dim party. It occurs to me that somebody (our ruling elite?) might be grooming her to run against Hillary in ‘16.
I will have to remember to ask my daughter who is going to be Skyping with us tomorrow from Japan. She is working there teaching English — she is doing this because she graduated from university in 2009 and there were absolutely no jobs available for her.
Do itasha mashte. We’re pretty close to the bottom of my Japanese vocabulary. I left there in January 1969.
