Egyptian security forces shoot dead dozens of pro-Mursi supporters

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian security forces shot dead dozens of supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohamed Mursi on Saturday, witnesses said, days after the army chief called for a popular mandate to wipe out "violence and terrorism".

Men in helmets and black police fatigues fired on crowds gathered before dawn on the fringes of a round-the-clock sit-in near a mosque in northeast Cairo, Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood said.

"They are not shooting to wound, they are shooting to kill," said Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad. "The bullet wounds are in the head and chest."

A Muslim Brotherhood website said 120 people had been killed and some 4,500 injured. A Reuters reporter counted 36 bodies at one morgue, while health officials said there were a further 21 corspes in two nearby hospitals.

Remember, Egypt elected the Muslim Brotherhood. My theory is the military, which runs the economy, cut off food and fuel while Morsi was in office. It seems to have suddenly returned after he was deposed. That still leaves the problem that the majority are Islamists.

Your theory sounds plausible, Pan_Yan. I have to wonder which is more dangerous to the civilized world: Islamists or hungry Islamists.

No. We cut off funding when they threw out the terrorist backing Muslim Brotherhood. However several of the oil rich Arab countries have written 10 figure checks to the Egyptian military since then.

There is another very powerful but never mentioned group. They are the money, the force of business and commerce.

The military is thier friend and perhaps tool. there is a symbiotic relation that alloes the country to function.

Similarly, in America, business is not cooperating with the marxixts in power. They are surviving, but not actively growing till the black plague is subdued and gone.

Obama's campaign was financed by big businesses and they have poured billions into Washington to buy influence since. Now that may be part of their survival strategy but the blatant buying of legislation and executive favor has never been worse.

You may be right but an accurate political poll in Egypt is about as likely as honest Democrat in Congress.

Yep. A wise thing to do since they understand their days in charge are over if the Islamists gain power.

I got a real education in Islam one afternoon when I was sitting in the business class lounge at Bahrain airport waiting for a connecting flight back home.

One of the perks of business travel for big companies was the right to use such lounges which offered such perks as complimentary snacks and cold drinks. Most of us were reasonable-- a bag or two of snacks, a can of juice, maybe a bottle of beer. But a group of Saudis who came in downed Heineken after Heineken, worse than I'd seen at any frathouse drinking party. When the Heineken was gone, they worked down to the next best label. They were worse than the Indians I'd seen on the rez guzzling someone's cologne.

And I had thought alcohol was strictly verboten by Islam. I guess such prohibition only applies when you are in the home country.

That's fairly typical in 3rd world countries. I don't know about Eygpt, but often the nominal top brass are not military people at all, but members of the rich and powerful. Often there is an outlandish number of Generals and Admirals. The two groups definitely need each other - one cannot function without some kind of support from the other.

Suspect that Morsi died resisting the coup (not been heard or seen since July 3). The military is fearful of the the eventual Islamic backlash and has decided to go on a strong pre-emptive offensive. Very bad times ahead for Egypt. The US should not become entangled in the affairs of this foreign country. Its really up to the Egyptians themselves to work out a consensus. Won’t come any time soon and before long hordes of hungry, impoverished but still fervent refugees will be arriving in the lands formerly known as Christendom.

A rabid Islamist that would murder a Christian, kill an American/British/German Tourist, one that would kill its own women for not wearing proper garb, or one that would imprison his detractors is not better than an Islamist who would not do those things. The MB are murdering 4th century thugs who should be exterminated.

That has been the normal state of the Islamic world for over a thousand years. It took European colonialism combined with the Ottomans to tone it down slightly.

the majority are Islamists

It does not have to be a majority. How much poison needs to be in a gallon of water before you consider the water to be poisonous?

That's why it is so difficult to eliminate muslim violence. It does not take a lot of them to be evil before you have to think that muslim religion is poisonous.

I'm betting on the Egyptian Army...

They would probably be easier to deal with than the Muslim Brotherhood - they don't have suicide death wishes and understand that their strength is localized - if we ever get a worthy Commander-in-Chief in the WH, many of our enemies might take a different tack.

“The bad guys are still shooting the bad guys.”

I’m not sure that’s the case. The people have risen up, demanding an end to the Muslim Brotherhood-led government, and are calling for a more secular government. The military is following the wishes of the people opposed to Islamic terrorists.

See this — http://cynthiafarahat.com/ — and this — https://www.facebook.com/CFarahat — for inside information from a conservative (in the good sense) Egyptian woman.

Only if they are "ethnically cleansed"...of moslems.

They need strong, repressive dictators in power...

That's what we had before morons like Jimmy Carter and the Kenyan came along, and took them out.

...to keep them from killing each other and everybody else.

You make it sound like a bad thing. We just need to secretly blow up one side or the other occasionally...whomever is winning.

And why is our government sending our money to violent uncivilized brutes?

So they can manage to keep killing each other, like Iran and Irak, back in the Reagan days.

Thanks for the ping Hossiermama...

As you know I and a few others have been on this since the get go....so let me share what this “stand off” is currently.

There are MB activists/clerics have sworn to ..” stay here until we die, one by one,” said Ahmed Ali, 24... The MB 'leadership' has ordered the people to continue the sit-in till Sunday ...... In the Rabba Mosque area Nasr City area where the Morsi people have been holding their sit in... many want to go home but are threatened if they do by the MBS.

The neighbors in the area have been filing complaints with the police about this sit-in because the MBS have built brick walls blocking the roads from them getting to and from work etc. Businesses have suffered losses and vandelism etc. The MBS built brick walls stopping all traffic thru the area. The police and military sent many messages for these people to move out and take down the walls...not to mention because of the neighbors many complaints about their stage set up and constant bellowing from it as well. The MBS last night forced Morsi people to remain in the Mosque and held them captive.....police etc. attempted to free those people and root out the MB thugs but there was firing ‘from inside’ the Mosque at the police.... so the MBS were armed.

This is the stand off...has nothing to do with anything but MB Islamic thugs against the police and military.....and the MB ‘using snipers’ to knock off their own people one by one.... as we saw and evidenced they were killing their own in the Rep.Guard incident...just as they're doing here. Then they will blame the military.

The MB Islamic thugs WANT a civil war...this is part of the plan to incite one....and they WILL shoot their own to create that. Keep in mind the MBS think these deaths are honorable.....it is not a loss to them...they continue to parade the injured and those who've died to garner Int'l sympathy at every news source that will.

What is ironic is the area the MBS shot Sadat is the very area the MBS are now loosing life...not that they care of life. But interesting just the same.

People forget that the Islamic clerics called for a Jihad against Egypt once Morsi was toppled.....they have many “snipers” that have entered the country now and that is why those who are dying have shots to the head and chest area...these guys are hired by the MBS to incite a civil war....
