Low-income families in New York City struggling with obesity will soon be offered doctor prescriptions -- not for pills, but for fruits and vegetables.
The idea is that families will meet with a doctor at each clinic, as well as a nutritionist and community health worker, to discuss the connection between health and nutrition.
They will then be offered Health Bucks equivalent to $1 per family member per day, so that they can buy unprocessed fruits and vegetables at the markets. That adds up to about $128 per month for a family of four.
Patients are asked to return to the clinic monthly to renew their fruit and vegetable prescriptions, have their body mass index (BMI) evaluated, and discuss their self-managed goals for healthy eating.

My thought exactly. Maybe I can pick up some veggie vouchers at half price from some welfare folks I know
“... $1 per family member per day, so that they can buy unprocessed fruits and vegetables at the markets. That adds up to about $128 per month for a family of four...”
$1 x 4 x 32 = $128 Q: OK stupid reporter, how many months have “about” 32 days? A: None!
“I wish there were severe restrictions ....”
And thus, the nanny state is born.
Just more food stamps pretending to be healthcare.
This is beyond insane, but I’ll play along...
Into which category does Mary Jane fall into? fruit or vegetable?
How soon will it be before we won’t be able to buy F&V without a prescription?
How much F&V can one purchase for $1? UpState NY peaches are 2.99/lb and broccoli and celery $1.99 a bunch, Cauliflower 4.99 a head..... that’s why I grow my own.
What an F’ing WASTE of the tax-payer’s money and a physician’s time!
Whoever thinks up the horse sh$t should be shot.
Stores will let them buy whatever they want with the money because no one has the time to control what people buy with their fed handout vegetable credit f’ing cards!
Folks on welfare eat what they want and they are NOT interested in diets or nutrition. How are you going to force compliance?
Bloomberg should take his obesity war and shove it where the sun doesn't shine (along with anyone else that subscribes to this insane idea).
So ‘the poor’ will be feasting on Mackinaw peaches while I’m stuck with whatever apples are on sale. Grr!
The “poor” people in this country live lifestyles which are the envy of half the world’s population.
You can buy herb and vegetable seeds and plants with food stamps. Why it isn't promoted more, especially in rural areas is beyond me.
But, eventually, the coupons will become to burdensome and will be replaced by EBT cards. After which the holders can buy whatever they want.
Libs never learn.
This assumes that expansion of the EBT system is not the original goal..
Ummmm...how much fruits and veggies could be purchased for the price of some air Jordan’s? Priorities...tough one.
A better option would simply be restricting what could be bought with food stamps. No Hostess or Little Debby snack cakes, no ice cream, no junk food. Potatoes, peas, carrots, cheese, milk, vegetables and healthy protein should be allowed. But ditch the junk food for healthy foods via purchasing restrictions, and you force them to eat healthier while giving them an incentive to earn more money.
