Why have there been so few openly gay ambassadors?
Washington Post ^ | July 26, 2013 | By Dennis Jett

Thomas Bayard, a former senator and secretary of state, became the first American diplomat to be given the title “ambassador” when he was sent to London in 1893. Since then a few thousand people have had that honor. But only three of them have been openly gay.

That is about to change. Last month, President Obama put forward the names of five openly gay nominees for ambassadorial posts. It’s a remarkable step, though possibly less revolutionary than it appears. For while the nominations reflect the change in public attitudes toward the LGBT community, they also show the importance of domestic political constituencies and the money they raise. And even if the United States is moving forward on gay rights, a large part of the rest of the world lags far behind.

It was only 16 years ago that the first openly gay person was nominated to an ambassadorial posting. President Bill Clinton put forward James Hormel’s name in 1997 for Luxembourg, a country smaller in population than the District of Columbia, and immediately ran into congressional opposition. Several senators firmly opposed Hormel, a prominent philanthropist and grandson of the founder of the meat company that created Spam, because he was gay. . .

BECAUSE if it really IS about the activities of consenting adults in PRIVATE it should not play any role in international diplomacy.

STALINISTS LIE. ALWAYS.

The homosexual agenda is NOT about privacy. It's about shoving perversity in your face and down your throat.

WTF? The Benghazi Boys had a good time with the deceased Ambassador in Libya.... The former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is gay.... There have been numerous gay ambassadors appointed in the past 5 years since Hillary took the reins at State, and the Human Resource Office has just about ensured that there is at least one or two gay foreign service officers at every post, no matter how small. While in Georgetown Guyana, there were three openly gay members on an Embassy staff of 16; in Rio de Janeiro the consulate had at least three openly bi- or gay foreign service officers.... In Hong Kong three members of mission were gay during my time in the management section alone.

Ambassadors represent the President of the United States. Nothing else needs be said.

Because an Ambassador represents the country and Homosexuality is a perversion that disgusts most people. A persons sexuality is not part of an Ambassadorship. However someone that is “openly gay”, or is a womanizer is forcing their sexuality on everyone else, and brings shame on his Nation.

Totally inappropriate for an Ambassador. A sane person can easily see this, but Homosexuals are not quite sane.

I know in Latin and African culture you have prove yourself to be straight that reason why they haven’t really been gay ambassor or they kept in the closet

Perverts make up 1% of the population yet the Washington Fishwrap wants half of our ambassadors to be flaming queens and Rosie O’Donuts bull dykes

Remarks in print of a NYT front-page editor about seven years ago indicated that far more than half of his front-page colleagues were gay or bi and didn't care who knew it.

Look at the other angle: Obama's campaign to wreck our foreign relations moves ahead. And queer bundlers get rewarded. Win-win.

The former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is gay...

Not really, I don't think. She was sexualized at Wellesley, where some LUGs got over on her using social pressure tactics. According to alleged journal entries of hers from back then, she was in moral agony while they were working her over. We think we know how it came out, but it cost her -- and I think toughened and callused her, leaving her hard and cynical.

Because societal decadence and depravity on the scale we see today is a relatively recent phenomenon. Because homosexuality was long considered a security risk because homosexuals were blackmail targets and because they are often psychologically unstable. Some of the most infamous of the Cold War spies—Burgess and Maclean—were homosexuals. Because ambassadors represent the USA abroad and should be wholesome rather than inherently disordered.
