Life on the road can be dangerous for professional athletes. Unfortunately for Texas Rangers reliever Tanner Scheppers, he found that out the hard way after the team arrived in Cleveland on Thursday night for their weekend series against the Indians.
According to Drew Davison of the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, Scheppers was attacked by a group of young males in downtown Cleveland after going out for a food run. The assault took place about two blocks away from the team's hotel, and as a result Scheppers was unavailable to pitch on Friday night after suffering a laceration near his left eye and experiencing headaches.
He was, however, cleared for action on Saturday, so it appears the attack won't have any lasting effects. That's good news for everybody, but especially for the Rangers. In 46 appearances this season, Scheppers has posted a 1.74 ERA and a 1.88 K/BB ratio. Those outstanding numbers helped earn him a spot in the American League's Final Vote for the All-Star game.

If they do or don't, what the hell is the difference. I have stayed in many of those same '4-Star' downtown hotels where the teams stay and never thought twice about walking down the street for a pizza or beer.
Why do you have to find some conspiracy here when the answer is pretty damn obvious? He ran into a pack of feral "youts" who just wanted to get whitey -- any whitey, it don't matter who it is. It is happening more and more often now.
The comments are written like they came from FR..!
Any explanation for that?
It is important to know your surroundings....In SF or Oakland or LA I would not go out after dark either. There are all sorts of cities where night time travel is not advised no matter who you are
better than possibly losing your life
I’m surprised pro sports teams don’t have a policy about players leaving the hotel on their own when they’re traveling on the road.
I found no conspiracy. I merely asked a question. I hope your bravado never costs you your life. If as you say it was a pack of ‘feral youts’ then that is all the more reason to stay indoors. My point was simply that in some cities (for decades now) it is not safe to travel outdoors after dark.
I suggested nothing else.

Tanner Treyvoned in Cleveland.
“Will the people ever be told that the young males are young BLACK males, and ALWAYS are?”
No need.
Seriously, this cryptic 21’st century news reporting style is in itself racist in a perverse way, in that if race isn’t mentioned, it is simply to be assumed by the reader that the perpetrators were black, even if they weren’t (OK, not likely, but PLAUSIBLE) - which is yet another example of liberal racism.
It’s going to get to the point that whites are going to have to travel in fire teams.
The weekend walk becomes a movement to contact in a diamond formation.
Yup, obviously a black on white hate crime. Holder, where the hell are you? Sharptoung, where the hell are you? Jessie, guess you don’t want to go out for a walk in Cleveland, the footsteps you hear behind you won’t be those of a white man. Barry O Soretello, the perps look just like they could be your sons.
The comments after the story are worth reading. I don’t think that Yahoo could keep the censoring up with the posts.
Really? Here's what you said in post #10.
"I dont believe it. Something hinky about this story"
So do you think this guy was doing something else other that just walking back to his hotel? That's the way your post read to me.
I hope your bravado never costs you your life.
It's not 'Bravado' to walk down the street in downtown. Yes, you have to keep you eyes open, but that is true anywhere and always has been.
It's bad luck to run into a pack of feral punks playing the 'knock-out game' and in the last couple of years, they have become a menace in many cities because no one wants to address the problem. They might meet the wrath of Al Sharpton if they do.
Maybe he just doesn’t like the idea of twenty-five bucks for a Tuna sandwich, four potato chips, and a toothpick.
Agreed, read them before posting.
Cleveland is a ghost town at night, with only a concentrated Casino crowd, and the rest of the city cowers under black roaming drug-users, gangsta-wannabe's, and general parasitic trash.
“Too bad Scheppers can’t hit, because none of the other Rangers can.”
Considering he’s a pitcher in a league that uses designated hitters, his chances of hitting are pretty slim. That being said, the Rangers are darn near unwatchable any more.
Amish. Lots of Amish hooligans in Ohio.
