Union County freeholders urge Legislature to override Christie veto on same-sex marriage

UNION COUNTY — The county freeholders have added their collective voice in support of gay marriage.

In what same-sex marriage proponents say is the first such instance in New Jersey by a county-level governing body, the all-Democratic board adopted a resolution this week urging members of the Legislature to overturn Gov. Chris Christie's veto of Senate and Assembly bills that would have legalized gay marriage.

Freeholder Alexander Mirabella, who introduced the board-sponsored resolution, said he hoped the board's action would spur freeholders in other counties to pass similar declarations and build momentum and ultimately encourage state legislators to override.

“It's the right thing to do,” Mirabella said after Thursday's meeting. “It's a basic civil right. All individuals in New Jersey who want to get married should have that right.”

The governor swiftly vetoed a same-sex marriage bill that cleared both the Assembly and Senate in Feb. 2012, proposing that a referendum be held on the issue. Legislators have until January to override Christie's veto.

It is widely thought that 10 votes from the Assembly and three from the Senate are still needed to override. But after the U.S. Supreme Court's invalidation of the Defense of Marriage Act last month, gay marriage advocates, including Garden State Equality and the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey, redoubled their efforts in the hopes of securing those votes and ultimate passage.

"New Jersey is the next front in our movement's national battle for full equality, and we must not fail. (The freeholders') resolution puts us one step closer to victory,” Garden State Equality's communications director, TJ Helmstetter, said in a statement.

Since bigamy is illegal, I think this trio will have trouble finding someone to perform the ceremony even in this corrupted New Jersey county.

Anyone supporting the evil of homosexuals getting wedded is inherently evil and will end up joining the sodomites in their honeymoon suite in hell.

Violation of natural law has nothing to do with civil rights! Encoding perversion is a sacrilege that pleases Satan and results in chaos. Do the people of New Jersey understand what they are trying to do?

Same sex marriage is nothing more than a transient popular culture riding the crest of its false acceptance before its return to oblivion.

So why don't they want it on the ballot in November?

It can't be because it's so overwhelmingly popular even in indigo-blue New Jersey that it needs to be jammed through the gerrymandered legislature if it doesn't get imposed by some unelected judge.
