Raleigh, N.C. — Gov. Pat McCrory signed 18 bills Monday, including two of the more controversial of the recently ended legislative session – those dealing with gun rights and abortion clinics.

The gun rights law, expands the places where those with legal permits can carry a concealed firearm to include bars and restaurants that serve alcohol, although they are not supposed to consume alcohol. It also allows permit holders to keep firearms locked in their car when parked on college or public school campuses.
The measure seals gun purchase and permit records, so that lists compiled by law by weapons dealers and county sheriffs – which include names, addresses and other identifying information – are no longer public record.
The law also strengthens penalties for those who violate firearms laws and will increase the amount of information, such as mental health problems, in the state's background check system.

Good job, Pat. I wasn’t sure he’d come through. May this be the harbinger of many, many defeats for the left in Our State.
Now they need to start defunding the left. They need to end grants to activists and “educational” organizations. They need to end state and local all funding for Planned Parenthood and the like too.
They need to eliminate all of the pet projects that have been added to the budget over so many years.
Wonder when it’s going to take effect.

Abortion-rights advocates say that provisions of the law, such as excluding abortion coverage from health plans offered to city and county employees, would further limit the availability of and access to the procedure statewide. They argue that, in signing the measure, McCrory is breaking a campaign promise not to allow any further limits on abortion rights.
"This law does not further limit access, and those who contend it does are more interested in politics than the health and safety of our citizens,” McCrory said Monday. The changes become law immediately.
So, let me get this straight, if I’m a public school teacher, I can bring my gun on campus, so long as it is kept in my car?
Is anything planned to enable teachers to carry inside school buildings? (last I heard, mass killings take place inside the building, not around the campus)
Just concealed carry permit holders can keep it locked in the car. It was more meant to clarify a problem- parents who had a gun in the car who came to pick up their kids were violating the law. It cleans that up, at any rate. If I remember correctly they made a provision for armed volunteers in recent legislation, but they are probably not going to arm the teachers anytime soon.
Reason I was asking is that, shortly after the Newtown shooting, we had 2 Code Blues at our school (the only place in my day where I do not feel safe, by the way). When I share with my students the district-approved procedure during such times (lock door, turn off light, crouch in corner, pretend you’re not home), they laugh. After these incidents, I was overwhelmed with the thought of defying the policy of no firearms in schools and of getting myself a CCW and start carrying in my classroom (and let the chips fall if I ever had to use—trusting in a jury of my peers). I believe my constitutional rights are being violated by not being able to self-protect (especially in light of recent school rampages.)

Same thing at my school.... I find I wish I had my trusty 1911 at such times. After one such drill one of my colleagues told me he wished he had a 12-guage present. I’d advise you to get a CCW anyway- its a good learning experience if nothing else. Besides, a lot of people hate teachers- when some maniac runs up to you screaming about how you ruined his life with F, it would be better to have it and not need it, than need it, and not have it. I do like the alteration a bit- its a step in the right direction, and it makes life easier.
Yes, looking to sign up for a class...after I acquire the right hand cannon. Maybe one day they will let teachers open-carry. Perhaps, then, more teaching and fewer distractions will occur in the classroom (hopeless dreamer that I am...)

Rowan, but I don’t work there. I’d be happy if they let us a keep a long gun handy myself- something you get out during the lockdown drill. A handy carbine or a short shotgun would roughly handle most school shooters at ranges comparable to a school hallway.
