Wrinkle in Health Law Vexes Lawmakers’ Aides
New York Times ^ | July 30, 2013 | By ROBERT PEAR

...Under a wrinkle that dates back to enactment of the law, members of Congress and thousands of their aides are required to get their coverage through new state-based markets known as insurance exchanges.

But the law does not provide any obvious way for the federal government to continue paying its share of the premiums for the comprehensive coverage.

If the government cannot do so, it could mean an additional expense of $5,000 a year for individuals and $11,000 for families under some of the most popular plans.

Not surprisingly, that idea is unpopular on Capitol Hill.

“It’s a very serious concern,” said Representative Billy Long, a Missouri Republican who said staff members were “freaked out” at the prospect of paying the full cost of insurance out of their own pockets.

“They’re thinking about leaving government service,” said Mr. Long.

““They’re thinking about leaving government service,” said Mr. Long””

Oh! No! Choose not be a career government employee? That would be devastating!

Why would anyone worry about a little thing like this? All it takes is the swipe of a pen in the Oval office to wipe out all worries and concerns and like magic - the problem disappears. The taxpayer remains on the hook for the employees insurance premiums and they can remain on the government payroll forever and ever and ever!! Any other problems you’d like to see addressed? There’s nothing that can’t be solved by soaking the taxpayer. Well, as long as the taxpayers exist that is.

Good. I hope all these bastards who subjected the rest of us to Obamacare get to enjoy it as much as the rest of us. I have no doubt, though, that they will pass some sort of emergency legislation to exempt themselves at the last second so that they aren’t forced into the same system as the peons.

I think that all Congressmen, their staffers, and their families should be forced to get their healthcare only at the WORST-rated VA hospital. The quality of care at all VA hospitals would magically skyrocket overnight.

Well, isn’t this interesting. Out here in the “real world” $11000 a year would be a cost improvement for a lot of folks paying for family coverage.

““They’re thinking about leaving government service,” said Mr. Long.”

I seriously doubt it. In fact I will go out on a limb and say not one....NOT EVEN ONE will quit government service.

If they add up all the bennies, they’ll take the continued pampering of government service that includes things like “It might snow so take the day off”, and “We’ll pay for your subway fare”......

Naw. Even if they had to pay (which they won’t) they still have an easier time than anyone who actually produces out in the real world and is forced to support all of this.

I say that this “crappy” provision (Congresscritters and their federal employee staffs must get their insurance from the Obamacare exchanges) NEEDS TO STAY IN PLACE. Let’s NOT ALLOW it to be repealed without simultaneously repealing the whole of Obamacare. These Congress folks need to be in the tub, taking a crap bath, with the rest of us out in the real world.

They will of course try to sneak in a “correction” for themselves and their staffs and then, individually, say they didn’t know that the “correction” was in whatever bill it was snuck into.

Didn't the Liar-in-Chief wax eloquent about how Obamacare would drive down the cost of insurance, that if you liked your insurance you could keep it and you could keep your doctor. Maybe these bureaucrats and members of Congress should see the lies first hand.

They will find or manufacture a loophole.

Or they will agree to pretend that one exists.

When did congress or President Obama start being concerned about what is legal or constitutional?

They both just plow ahead and do what they want, wiping their feet on the constitution when they are done for the day.

Congratulations to Senator Grassley for putting this poison pill into the law. I think it is WONDERFUL. Let’s hope some good conservatives are keeping a watchful eye out to make sure no “correction” is allowed to be slipped into a continuing resolution or other bill.

I love it when socialists get a taste of their own medicine. And if they quit? Good riddance. Anyone involved in that filthy bill deserves to lose their jobs, their pensions, and if we can't escape ObamaCare, their freedom as well.

Can't Obama just declare that his law means the opposite of what it says?

[paraphrased from Through The Looking Glass]

'When I use a law,' Obama said, in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.'

'The question is,' said Alice, 'whether you can make law mean so many different things.'

'The question is,' said Obama, 'which is to be master — that's all.'

Translated:

"They're thinking of getting real jobs since sucking on the government teat is no longer as sweet."

What the hell makes these lawmakers think that it's not a big problem for those of us with REAL jobs?? Effin morons.

The Republicans could have stopped this bill, they could still stop it. They did not & they will not. They are liars of the first degree. "Elect me and I'll defund ObamaCare.....uh what? are you speaking to me? I don't remember saying anything like that"

The lawmakers’ aides are paid from the budget of the individual legislators. Each legislator may have to cut a flunky or two (but not relatives, after hour squeezes, or money shufflers) to make money available for raises to cover the costs. A lot of whoopiedoo about nothing other than the fierce backstabbing that will go on amongst the flunkies.

Lawmakers, aides may get Obamacare exemption (April 24, 2013)

Congressional leaders in both parties are engaged in high-level, confidential talks about exempting lawmakers and Capitol Hill aides from the insurance exchanges they are mandated to join as part of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, sources in both parties said.

The talks — which involve Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), the Obama administration and other top lawmakers — are extraordinarily sensitive, with both sides acutely aware of the potential for political fallout from giving carve-outs from the hugely controversial law to 535 lawmakers and thousands of their aides. Discussions have stretched out for months, sources said.

A source close to the talks says: “Everyone has to hold hands on this and jump, or nothing is going to get done.”

Well, it was a Republican who put the wording into the bill requiring the politicians and their staffs to take a dose of their own medicine. In the original form of the bill, the politicians and staff were exempted from Obamacare.

You might recall that a web site, known as Yid with a Lid, asked a question that went viral, “If Obamacare is so great, why have the politicians exempted themselves?”

So,right before passage, some Republican added the language while the bill was in committee. Since the lawmakers never read the bill before voting, they were caught by surprise.

It was indeed a poison pill, forcing the lawmakers to get a taste of their own medicine. I do believe that you are right about it having been Grassely, who inserted the language.
