HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- The next phase of Connecticut's new gun control law is underway. All of the new permits are now available and must be obtained by the end of the year.
When Governor Malloy signed the new gun control bill into law back in April. He ordered that all of the new permits and permit requirements be made available to the public no later than August 1st, so that all gun owners would have time to comply with the new laws by the first of the new year.
Ahead of schedule, all of the information has been posted on the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection website.
Even though the popular AR-15 and similar rifles are now illegal to sell, if you bought one on April 4 or before you can keep it. However, you must register it.
You must register ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 bullets. And you also need a permit to purchase ammunition.
There are easy to find links to printable versions of all of the new permits on the website, along with instructions.
People are rushing to comply with all the new rules, and at times the line can stretch all the way out the door.
There was a moderate waiting time in the middle of the day Tuesday.
Despite loud grumblings on the internet about the new law, people News 8 spoke with said they didn't object to the new rules, even though regular pistol permits are taking four months or longer to get.
"I don't think it should have taken that long at the town level to get this far, but I can respect the changes," said Curt Smith, of Granby.
"It shouldn't be a problem if you're an upstanding citizen, you shouldn't have a problem with going through the proper channels," said Dornett McIntosh, of Hartford.
However, the waiting lines there are likely to last for the next five months.
"Once people understand the laws and figure out what they want as far as; do they want to get a pistol permit? Do they have a magazine that needs to be registered? Once they understand the law, once we hit the January 1st mark, we should start to calm down," said Lt. J. Paul Vance, CT State Police.

How do I hate this state? Let me count the ways.....
Leave before they will not let you. “Papers, please”.
Why would you give that gov’t a roadmap for follow-up confiscation?
My “compliance” would be to beat feet out of that state and get to America.
Oh, I’m sure all the criminals and psychos - the people who use a gun to murder - will be lining up to comply with the new Connecticut gun laws. This state is beyond hopeless!
Then you're an idiot.
Long before there are internal movement controls there will be internal financial controls. Already states fight over whether you are a resident for purposes of income and estate taxation. The Federal government treats a forfeiture of citizenship as a taxable event, requiring you to pay income taxes on any unrealized gains of securities or property, just as if you'd sold them.
Next, the states will treat you that way, too. Want to retire to no-tax FL or TX--what percentage of your working years were spent in CT, NY, CA or MA? Send in tax on that percentage of your income or unrealized gains.
They won't be around very long, anyway. This is only the beginning.
That is their plans for us all. To bring us under yoke of bondage. They have so many intricate plans all in incremental order.
I just hope it is delayed/deferred until I can get my arse outta this shiite hole.
I wanted to get my non-resident permit in MA. It was an ton of money, was good for a year. And, every time you renewed you had to have your fingerprints taken....again.
CT is surrounded by such liberty loving states as Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York. Connecticut, which Obama won by "only" an 18 point margin, is actually the most "conservative" state in the region.
Of course the entire leadership of the CT Republican Party officially endorses gun control, abortion and gay marriage and the state's last Republican governor raised taxes on the rich to fund social programs --> in other words CT Republicans are to the left of most Democrats in normal places.
Poor Yankee unfortunates. I feel y’alls pain, vicariously speaking.
It’s the outworking of decades of letting the unions and liberals run your lives, without whimpering or fighting back.
