Hi! Things be quite busy lately is why I’ve not been here but peeking in. Lots of flying, mostly maintenance flights or off to Brissie for weekends. Also looking at new landing sites (so-called) - back country roads. But all in all it’s been fun.

Snapping, Snarling Thoughts

August 1, 2013

Many years ago, my father and I hiked through Big Bend in Texas. It’s a national park now, but in those days it was rough country.

One night we were rolling out our sleeping bags when a couple with a dog asked if they could camp nearby. We welcomed their company and turned in for the night. They tethered their dog to a stake beside their tent.

Some hours later my father nudged me awake and turned his flashlight into the darkness. Illuminated by the light, we saw pairs of yellow eyes peering out of the shadows. A pack of snapping and snarling coyotes were closing in on the dog. Although we chased them off and our neighbors put the dog in their tent, we slept fitfully.

I think of that night when I read Psalm 59 and David’s twice-repeated imagery: “At evening they return, they growl like a dog” (vv.6,14). David was thinking of Saul’s army that was closing in on him. I think, however, of the thoughts that return to menace us. They come back at nightfall, snapping and snarling: “You’re stupid.” “You’re a failure.” “You’re useless.” “Who needs you?”

When we have such thoughts, we can revel in God’s unconditional, unending love. His steady devotion is our refuge in the dark night of self-doubt and fear (v.16).

Dear Lord, I am so thankful that You love me
unconditionally. Please chase away destructive thoughts
that keep returning to take away my confidence in You
and Your work in me. I want to rest in You and Your love.
Knowing that God loves us can dispel doubt.

Read: Psalm 59

You have been my defense and refuge in the day of my trouble. —Psalm 59:16
Bible in a Year:
Psalms 57-59; Romans 4

Good morning, Connie....pickup went slick as a whistle. They found each other and were all together at the curb.

We spent the evening chatting and catching up. My brother and his wife were last up here in 2006. Everyone went their separate ways about 10p and things are all quiet now.

Today is a dry run to scope out construction areas to avoid getting to the cemetery, wash the car, do some weeding, and find the closest ice supply.

DC METROLAND WEATHER

~ Today...Rain showers early
with scattered thunderstorms arriving for the afternoon.
High around 80F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph.
Chance of rain 60%.

~ Tonight... Isolated thunderstorms during the evening.
Mainly clear skies after midnight.
Low 66F. Winds light and variable.
Chance of rain 30%

Making Z Zoup
A cup of this...a teaspoon of that...

Inventor Gail Borden, Jr.
invented condensed milk in the 1850s
and later the popular Lazy Susan table aid,
but he struck out with one other invention:
the poorly-received "meat biscuit."

Groundhogs are “fossorial”
— they live most of their lives underground.
They dig burrows or “dens”
that have several entrances.
Each is connected with the main tunnel
and the nesting chamber where
the animal hibernates for the winter.
A groundhog's whiskers help it navigate underground.

Grasshopper Glacier in Montana
was named for the grasshoppers
that can still be seen frozen in the ice.

On the Baja coast, osprey couples
return to the same nests year after year.
These birds rebuild their old nest,
carefully repairing any damage
caused by winds, rain, and age.
After years of rebuilding,
some osprey nests can reach heights of 4 feet.
(eagles do the same)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art,
in New York, houses the largest collection
of baseball cards: 200,000.

The FR Canteen is ALWAYS

Come in, sit down.
Grab a cup of joe, or tasty tea.
Mingle a bit, chat with the troops
or family member.
There's always plenty of conversation, silliness,
and plain old BS in the FR Canteen.

Lynn-dah has graduated to her regular diet.

I still give her a slice of chicken when I give her pills.

I had a LOT of students Wednesday, mostly make-up lessons from Monday when my car was in the shop.

Although Lynn-Dah is still on antibiotics, and will be for some tim,e to come, she is acting much more like “herself”.

I am SO grateful to FR for you help and your prayers!

All is well. We’ve got rain in the area. Had a good downpour last night. Today is mostly drizzle so far.

Whatz up out your way?
