Howard Dean: Rand Paul's No Libertarian Because He's Pro-Life
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 08/01/2013 5:11:38 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

In one fell swoop, Howard Dean has managed to expose his ignorance of libertarianism while making a stale and insulting joke about New Jerseyites.

Discussing on today's Morning Joe the dust-up between Rand Paul and Chris Christie and the broader issue of the philosophical rifts within the GOP, Dean declared that "Rand Paul is not a libertarian" because he is pro-life. Dean is apparently unaware of the lively debate over abortion within libertarian circles, with a reported 30% of libertarians being pro-life. Dean also warned Paul: "do not take on a guy from Jersey. Obviously this guy does not watch HBO." That was presumably an allusion to The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire, two HBO shows featuring Garden State criminals.

For 30 years they have exemplified everything that is wrong with college sports, and have done so with alarming consistency.

Agreed.

Recently my Gators sure have been screwing up though.
Oh well, I went to UF for engineering, not football.

Libertarians oppose the initiation of force against innocents. Libertarians who believe that the unborn are human lives are pro-life, and that the mother must not initiate force against them.

This shows that Democrats are worried Paul can pull certain liberal elements out of Democratis and Independent ranks.

Thanks! That's very nicely put. I bet you've thought about that before. I've had just this argument with 'tard acquaintances -- that being anti-abortion need not have anything to do with religion (thought it obviously often does) and that there is a clear libertarian position against abortion that applies as well.

And of course the 'tard talking point is -- retarded, as you'd expect. The 10 Commandments includes one forbidding murder. Does that make the laws against it "religious" and a violation of people's freedom of religion.

But then if they could think they wouldn't be liberals.

Libertarians who believe that the unborn are human lives are pro-life, and that the mother must not initiate force against them.

They are a minority of dissenters, but libertarianism itself is pro-abortion.

The libertarian position on abortion:
"Recognizing that abortion is a sensitive issue and that people can hold good-faith views on all sides, we believe that government should be kept out of the matter, leaving the question to each person for their conscientious consideration."

It’s important to distinguish between positions of the Libertarian Party, and those of the diverse range of libertarians.

Just as we might say that the Republican Party “believes” XYZ, while conservatives might disagree (sometimes even among themselves)

Nonsense, their party perfectly represents libertarianism, that is why they formed it, to put their philosophy into the real world of political positioning.

The tiny liber party is a pure representation of libertarianism.

They are a minority of dissenters, but libertarianism itself is pro-abortion.

The fact is, they're a pretty damn large minority. The reasons that plank is worded the way it is are: 1) the old guard, who manipulates the LP levers of power, were and are very pro-abortion, and 2), they know damn good and well they'd lose a huge chunk of the membership if they tried a straight pro-abort wording.

What???? No they aren't large in numbers that is why they have no influence, libertarians are permanently pro-abortion and that is why the use such BLUNT language, ZERO impediments to abortion, ZERO laws against abortion.

"we believe that government [law] should be kept out of the matter" that's it, just a big fat ZERO.
