Seven months after 20 children and six educators were fatally shot in a Newtown elementary school, some local business owners said today that a financial downturn that began with road closings and an emotional pall over the town persists.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy visited downtown businesses to show support and learn how a $500,000 state grant intended to help local stores and restaurants is working.
Its impressive, he told reporters after a one-hour tour. People are very positive.
But Andy Lafreniere, who owns Suzuki Music School, told the governor that business is not good.
Wed like people not to be afraid of Sandy Hook, he said, referring to the section in Newtown where the children and adults were killed by a gunman on Dec. 14. Theres just an aura about the place. Combined with the recession, we think people are avoiding Newtown.
First Selectwoman Patricia Llodra, whose job description even in normal times includes selling her town to employers and tourists, rejected Lafrenieres view of the local economy. She said the weak economic recovery is to blame.
I think hes off-base totally, she said. Its off everywhere. Its struggling everywhere.
...
And the Sandy Hook Elementary School remains closed, robbing the nearby downtown of traffic by school staff who shopped and vendors who would stop for lunch or make purchases.
The state stepped in with the grant to help offset the losses, and about half of that money has been distributed to businesses. The other half is set to be used to continue a 10-year downtown improvement project with landscaping, new sidewalks, lighting and other changes. In addition, Newtown will use a portion of the state money for marketing and business development.

Most of the economic damage was done by the govts response to the nutjob shooting people.
We let one criminal destroy a town.
The truth is, when God is not allowed in a particular area, a secular school, for example, the enemy, who exists whether atheists believe it or not, moves about unopposed.
And this is what results. Horror.
Guns are important for protection against bad guys with guns. That’s a fact.
There’s more going on here.
Just raise their taxes, Malloy.

500,000.00 for business affected by a shooter in an elementary school a mile away.
Something isn’t right here but whats new in Ct.
Plus just like Zimmerman’s acquittal most of us no longer really care, tragedy yes, obsessed with the incident nope.
Vote buying?
You’re right. Some people are waking up.
Malloy has totally f**d up Connecticut with his taxes & policies.
Newtown is a very small town with lots of green space. In such towns in CT it ~could~ ~literally~ take 15-20 minutes or more to drive to the other side of town, without backup too.
I bet you there’s Newtown people looking into the woods behind their mansions loaded with goodies and going, “what good would 9-1-1 do my family?” ???
Yup, stupid idiots.
Oh, for the love of Mike.
In CT many of the smaller towns don’t even have their own Police force. They have Resident State Troopers who only work that town. However, in many cases they do not provide 24x7x365 coverage. So if you call 911, the cops may be responding from the far side of a neighboring town.
