FBI pressures Internet providers to install surveillance software

CNET has learned the FBI has developed custom "port reader" software to intercept Internet metadata in real time. And, in some cases, it wants to force Internet providers to use the software.

The U.S. government is quietly pressuring telecommunications providers to install eavesdropping technology deep inside companies' internal networks to facilitate surveillance efforts.

FBI officials have been sparring with carriers, a process that has on occasion included threats of contempt of court, in a bid to deploy government-provided software capable of intercepting and analyzing entire communications streams. The FBI's legal position during these discussions is that the software's real-time interception of metadata is authorized under the Patriot Act.

Attempts by the FBI to install what it internally refers to as "port reader" software, which have not been previously disclosed, were described to CNET in interviews over the last few weeks. One former government official said the software used to be known internally as the "harvesting program."

Carriers are "extra-cautious" and are resisting installation of the FBI's port reader software, an industry participant in the discussions said, in part because of the privacy and security risks of unknown surveillance technology operating on an sensitive internal network.

It's "an interception device by definition," said the industry participant, who spoke on condition of anonymity because court proceedings are sealed. "If magistrates knew more, they would approve less." It's unclear whether any carriers have installed port readers, and at least one is actively opposing the installation.

In a statement from a spokesman, the FBI said it has the legal authority to use alternate methods to collect Internet metadata, including source and destination IP addresses: "In circumstances where a provider is unable to comply with a court order utilizing its own technical solution(s), law enforcement may offer to provide technical assistance...

I was thinking about changing my moniker to something that the FBI would be reluctant to track like Benghazi, Fast and Furious or birth certificate.

Rather than have to actively control each and every one of us one-on-one, they want to induce FEAR and let us self-censor and control ourselves.
Induce FEAR to influence behavior.
Isn't that the very definition of TERRORISM?

That sums it up very well, null and void; as well, I have a hunch the F, the B, and the I and other so-called "national security" groups are trying to use these revelations as distractions for much deeper, much more inimical invasions of our privacy—or else they're the world's worst secret keepers.

Oh, by the way, what crony business organizations are President You Didn't Build That and his "administration" selling all this data to? Who benefits? Who pays? Who comes out furthest ahead by participating in the ever deepening corruption?

“Kiss my grits, usurper.” is my simple reply. Being a woman, I cannot reply in so pithy a manner. I feel a rant coming on.

It is exceedingly difficult to endure 8 years of tyranny.
How many of us mourned back on election eve in 2008, yet how much deeper the sorrow would have been had we known the depths of the evil that would be unleashed with that election. We were fully aware what a second term would bring. Who could have imagined the thousands of evil acts this group of America-haters had in store, waiting for the power to implement it, and in many cases where they didn’t have the power, trampling the Constitution and implementing evil by illegal EO. May God have mercy on us and not judge the country as a whole. As a whole America has turned from God to worship many idols. I pray that God will find there are enough followers of Jesus, to allow us a way out tyranny and into freedom again. May God send us righteous Christian leaders who do not wither at the thought of fighting for what is right, and may He remove those who are no more than democrats clothed in the word republican.

End of rant

“When will the CEO’s of major private corporations such as trading, banking, investing, oil, consumer goods, etc., rise up and protest this?”

They won’t rise up because too many of them are Dems.

Although the workings of a NWO has been around for decades, as president, George H. Bush publicly declared the era of a NWO and that they will not fail in successfully implementing it. I believe many will agree that the most dangerous enemy facing the American people today is the American government and the behind the scene elites, banking cartels and organizations such as the Carlyle Group who control it. If one pays attention one can easily conclude that our American society is currently being manipulated in order to usher in an era of destruction. Thus, the NWO to the rescue but it will only be on their terms of submit and surrender. Jesus told us of these times to come and that we are to accept them as growing pains. Christian persecution and human suffering is fast becoming the norm and we must never forget at whose hand is at the center of the suffering.

At the time of this writing, there were 30 responses to JR’s posts. Here’s how I would categories the reponses(directly to the posts):

Doom and Gloom (and Proof there of):13

We should do something:3

Warning to GOV:3

Jokes 1

Solutions or Counter Measures: 0

And this is why, in part we’re losing. We throw up our hands and say there’s nothing we can do about it. The closest I saw to something in the right direction was:

“...If the FBI can violate the Constitution, so can we. NSA and FBI better stop this crap before we get tired of putting up with it and put a stop to it HARD...”

Fact is, we should. We all know what the 4th Amendment says, and that regine in DC has decided to ignore it and has in fact rubber-stamped violating it. All it takes is someone in power whenever they decide to use whatever against us. So it is time for us tech folks to start developing alternative means of communication for if/when the need arises. I am in the software/internet business, so it wouldn’t much of the audience to get too technical, but safe to say we’re gonna have to come up with something that doesn’t use the standard IP protocals that were agreed upon by browser developers and network providers years ago. Not only that, we will probably need more independent nodes/relay points out there to transmitt information over the new network.

There’s a lot more we can and should be doing. Some include means of communications that may be more organizational that electronic. The point is, we should be doing these things NOW. I for one, don’t want my children stuck in some Warsaw (or Detroit) ghetto hearing the troops outside wonder why their parents didn’t do anything.

The old mantra is ‘If you want peace, prepare for war’. Here’s the new one: “We’re are war, and there wont be any peace until we start fighting back.

We have to stop the whining, and crying. We know what’s going on. It’s time people.

Welcome to a fully functional fascist government; the nexus of Dems, Rinos, big government, media, and big corporations. This is why the government-media-industrial complex must destroy types like Palin; she'd bust up their party.

Kind of hard to violate the Constitution when only the Individual has any Rights, no? ;)

I say, they want to bring it, bring it hard. ‘Cuz when the video gets out of a few instances, the rest of the U.S. is not going to take it lightly...I hope.

Null,

Very succinct explanation for what they are attempting. Perhaps a return to 18th/19th century communications efforts are in order. Was that a smoke signal or is someone barbequeing in Walnut Creek again? Black smoke, white smoke, phosphorous smoke, gun smoke. So many possibilities.
