Professor says kids no longer need to learn spelling and grammar because of smartphones
The Daily Caller 4 hours ago Education
Several skills that every kid once learned in school are going the way of the dodo in a hurry. Diagramming sentences is practically an extinct art, for example. Cursive handwriting and memorized multiplication tables look to be swiftly headed that way.
Apparently, the next thing that kids will no longer need to learn is spelling and grammar.
Sugata Mitra, a professor of educational technology at Newcastle University in northeast England, announced that traditional language rules are out of fashion, reports the Daily Mail. Kids dont need to waste time on those things, see. State-of-the-art computers and mobile phones can make the necessary corrections.
Spelling and grammar are a bit unnecessary because they are skills that were very essential maybe 100 years ago but they are not right now, Mitra said. Firstly, my phone corrects my spelling so I dont really need to think about it and, secondly, because I often skip grammar and write in a cryptic way.
The professor made the anti-spelling proclamation at a time when the British government is rolling out a host of educational standards including one that will require students to take a spelling test involving 200 complex words near the end of grade school.
Another exam for 11-year-olds that tests spelling, grammar and punctuation was launched this year.

Voluntary Human InStupidment
Ignorant kids using their phones for brains.
Auto-correct hell.
Somehow I don’t think that the kids who post here had “learned” spelling and writing of your/you’re, its/it’s, pedal/peddle, there/they’re/their and so many others from their smartyphones!
Well then let me help.
This person is a dumb ass!
A Professor?? WHAT A SURPRISE!
Cell phones and calculators should be banned from schools...but that would be racism and inequality.
Soooo what about the people who program the phones?
what a complete idiot, learning spelling and grammar are the foundation of learning how to think. he needs to be fired so he can go play in the sandbox
Ebonics? Wha’s dah bitches and hoes?
See that all the time in electronic editions of books, emails, etc... Can’t help who it offends, but people look illiterate when a word is not used or spelled properly. This is ignorance personified. More “dumbing down” of the educational system and further proof that future generations will be even less-equipped to compete in the work force than current ones.
100’s of million Asian kids memorize dozens of characters/ week. For years.
This mental exercise HAS to do something positive to their brains.
Based on the resumes we received lately, we plan to hire someone who can decipher and read text just to find out what these applicants are really saying.
Counterintuitive.
Exactly!
What good is being smart if you can’t express yourself so others can understand you?
I don’t care who I’ll offend either in repeating what one teacher told me once, and that is that people who don’t know how to spell most likely don’t read, or don’t know how to reach, because one learns spelling not from writing but from, d’uh, reading!
"da police caught me outta skool."
Such a tragedy...he would have been the next Shakespeare, I tell you!
reach=read (Yeah, I didn’t read what I wrote!)
That could be series, I’ll check my beeber..........
Guess I’d fail. Supposedly I’m a part of this generation, however a late comer, and I don’t know any of this shorthand garbage.
Depending on what she looks, like...credit where it's due, perhaps?
For that matter, kids don’t “need” to learn anything. Now we can close all public schools and save billions of tax payer dollars. They don’t learn anything useful there anyways.
SMART phones DUMB kids
“It’s a beautiful thing, the destruction of words.” ‘Symes’ George Orwell
“It was a pleasure to burn.” Ray Bradbury
Dummy Professor on Parade.
I remember 1960's The Time Machine with Rod Taylor. When he went way into the future, the people there couldn't read the books they had - which were splintering and falling to dust from age and neglect - and they were as dumb as rocks and very compliant, something the feral government would love to see happen.
Is this where we are headed? My wife and I make our kids read as much as we can, and they are good readers (my daughter even writes short stories, scripts, etc.), But what about their kids? Will there be anything left for them to read besides today's Kindle, which will probably be politically correctly re-written every chance the libs get.
I was a real crackah when I visited Europe and had a fairly smart phone there to communicate with my acquaintances there using SMS, that we call here using the ugly neologism ‘texting’ (sorry, I prefer acronyms over ugly!), and I s l o w l y typed full sentences doing it, none of the shorthand lingo.
I think you just hit the nail squarely on the head!
Let’s be honest. They no longer have to learn spelling and grammar for the same reasons they no longer have to learn or understand math. It’s too hard for the teachers to teach, most of whom don’t know anything, either. Teachers are owned by their plantationist unions who couldn’t care less about kids anywhere, or anything other than their own enrichment. And the democrat loving unions controlling the schools have only one education agenda: to turn out illiterates who know only how to vote for democrats.
As someone who struggles mightily with spelling and grammar. I think this is BS. A lot of times when i write online people don’t take my viewpoint seriously because my spelling and grammar are horrid. I want to improve it, NOT make excuses for it, that i can type like an idiot, because i have a cell phone.
But it has electrolytes!
Using this moron’s logic, why should we spend billions and billions of dollars “educating” the “churldren”. Just buy each newborn a “smart” phone and be done with it. Throw in a quick 10 minute session on putting condoms on cucumbers and the coming extinction of the polar bears and call that good. That’s their “education”. They’ll be fine until an EMP event occurs.
I don't know about the "reaching" part, but I see proof of what you say all the time.
People will write "should of" and "would of" without realizing how ignorant it makes them look. That's not a typo, that's just ignorance.
And they hear it all the time on the idiot box, but if you don't read it, you apparently don't realize they are saying "should've" and "would've".
"Professor says kids no longer need to learn spelling and grammar because of smartphones"
Another sci-fi movie becoming reality. I’ve seen sci-fi movies set in the future where nobody knows how to read or write or do even the simplest math because computers do it for them.
Deer Professir: your defiantly a liberal if you think theirs know place for speling and grammer. Their are to many words that sound a like butt are spelt diferently.
Your spelling and grammar were just fine in that post (although it's proper to capitalize the pronoun "I"), so I can pay attention.
It's hard to wade thru the crap that some folks post. I've always said that if you don't care enough to write it correctly, then why should I care enough to read it?
What are you doing with my phone? Did I leave it somewhere?
Newspeak:
Vastly streamlining and truncating language and other means of expression is a government ploy implemented throughout the educational system and the media in order to stifle independent thought, and thus control the masses.
I refuse to accept or send text messages. Anybody who wishes to discuss something with me can CALL me.
Or, if that is too difficult, they can write a letter, with a pen, on paper, in cursive.
The post office still delivers.
Oh yes, and tuition will go up so that dumba$$e$ like this can continue to dummify our kids.
And to the NSA trolls, FU.
I’ve wondered about diagramming sentences. I haven’t diagrammed one since fourth grade (1964 or so), so why did I learn it?
Maybe it taught me the parts of speech. Knowing the diagramming is not important, knowing the parts of speech is.
Hard to say.
Good for you!! Wish I saw this attitude more often these days instead of the following mentality: “I have ADHD/ADD/Dyslexia/Dysgraphia, etc... so I shouldn’t have to _____________” (Put “spell”, “write correctly” or anything else you want to put in the blank.)
like Ideocracy
