Libtalker Thom Hartmann Claims 'Flush Rush' Backfired
NewsBusters ^ | August 5, 2013 | P.J. Gladnick

Remember the 'Flush Rush' boycott attempted by David Brock and Media Matters which called for advertisers to drop their sponsorships of Rush Limbaugh's radio show? How did that work out in the long run? According to liberal radio talk host Thom Hartmann on CNN's Reliable Sources yesterday it completely backfired because it ended up hurting liberal shows:

David Brock and Media Matters were leading the boycott Limbaugh crusade, which did presumably some damage to the Limbaugh show. I can tell you it did a lot of damage to progressive talk radio, because a lot of advertisers right across the board said just pull me out of all talk radio.

I don't know why there is any support for major corporations among conservatives.

I tune into Rush occasionally and the only ads I hear are from vitamin companies, debt restructurers, etc.

There are no ads for McDonalds or Walmart or Apple or any big name products or services.

Major corporations have minor cojones when it comes to any type of political commentary.

I hope they love the fascist state they are contributing to with their support of illegal immigration, deficit spending, convoluted tax laws that help the connected, and turning a blind eye to anything that smells too Constitutional.

I believe most of the companies that boycotted Rush’s show eventually asked to come back and Rush declined their request. A major over reaction by clueless pc sympathizers.

The Law of Unintended Consequences.

LibTards believe that if they deny its existence in the universe, it won’t have an effect on them.

I know one lib that goes apesh1t whenever I say it. Like Pavlov’s dog. It’s great fun.

There are no ads for McDonalds or Walmart or Apple or any big name products or services.

None of them have much presence on local radio anyway. The local McDonald's franchise may decide to advertise locally, but most McD's advertising appears to be done on TV. And I've never heard a WalMart ad on the radio - no matter the format.

If you turn to any music station you will hear ads for famous name clothes, beverages, cruises, etc.

No such ads on Rush.

One more thing about the supposedly brave entrepreneurs that run our "free market" system: They are only too quick to limit our 2nd Amendment rights. Most major corporations consider it a violation of their policies to bring a gun onto their property even if it is an unloaded gun in the locked trunk of a car in a parking lot. So forget about going to that shooting range after work if you don't live near where you work.

It's only a minor hassle, but it is a major limitation on 2nd Amendment rights.

Dave and the guys were cheered on by lefties in faculty lounges relaxing with a joint in leatherette recliners.

If you haven't heard a promotion for Apple on Rush, you aren't listening...He might be their biggest advertiser.

When people who don’t beleive in the voluntary free exchange of goods as a principle of freedom come up with ANY economic policy such as a boycott, you can always expect the fools to fail miserably...

Consider the demographics of their customers. A large percentage of talk radio listeners do so while working. It makes more sense to advertise on a medium which reaches people who are sitting on their butts doing nothing.

You hear those ads if their is a local outlet or it is a syndicated program. And so I do hear those type ads during Rush and other of the conservative talkers on the stations I listen to, and the same on the music stations I listen to (some are the same.) It's local radio, which is vastly different than satellite radio or even TV networks. There is no comparison when it comes to the issue of advertising.

While I sympathize with your concern over 2nd amendment issues, this thread is about radio advertisers, not how private businesses choose to address the 2nd amendment.

Just ask Carbonite, the Internet backup company that dumped Rush over the Slut, only see sales plummet.

Carbonite tried to come back begging and Rush told 'em he didn't need 'em.

That is all true. Radio, other than satellite and internet, is a local medium, much more so than TV is anymore. Unless there is a local reason, national outfits are not going to advertise on a local radio station in a market where they have no outlet for their product.

The big guys probably wouldn't get the same return paying those "confiscatory rates" as a little guy would. One mention by Rush can propel a small business out of obscurity to a solid footing.

That being said - I agree with your premise.

I distinctly recall some boycott called against some Orange Juice that Rush promoted... and Rush’s counter, “an orange a day, keeps the NEA ar bay”. That Christmas my Dad decided to ship cases of Indian River Citrus to clients as opposed to the traditional pound of See’s Candies (which used to only be availabile in California).
