Alex Rodriguez Suspended Through 2014, Still Belongs In The Hall Of Fame
FORBES ^ | August 5, 2013 | Chris Smith

After weeks of waiting, MLB has finally announced its Biogenesis suspensions. Twelve players have been hit with 50-game suspensions, and Alex Rodriguez has been issued a suspension through the 2014 season for a total 211 games. Because A-Rod’s suspension will come under the Joint Drug Agreement, he can still play while he appeals the punishment and will be in the New York Yankees’ lineup tonight for the first time this season.

Many have questioned how the suspension will impact Rodriguez’s “legacy” (see here, here and here), and it’s a subject that will undoubtedly be debated for years to come. What’s not up for debate, though, is that A-Rod has been among baseball’s best players since he took over as the Seattle Mariners’ starting shortstop in 1996, and he ranks among the most dangerous hitters of all time.

Rodriguez is currently 16th in career wins above replacement (Fangraphs) with 114, ranking ahead of Rickey Henderson, Jimmie Foxx, Mike Schmidt and Carl Yastrzemski. He is fifth all-time in home runs with 647, and he ranks second behind only Barry Bonds among those who played during the steroid era. In other words, of all the sluggers who used – or allegedly used – performance enhancers, only one has gone deep more times than A-Rod. His three MVP awards are tied for second-most in history, and in 19 seasons he’s ranked among the top ten in MVP voting ten times.

Put more simply, Rodriguez absolutely dominated his era and is an all-time great. If not for steroid allegations, Rodriguez would not only be a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame, but a likely choice for first-ballot enshrinement.

Just do like cycling did with Lance Armstrong, simply delete all stats & records for any years where he was doing illegal drugs, then re-evaluate his career numbers.

More interesting is that 8 of the 13 are or were clients of the sports agency, ACES.
2013 clients busted for PED’s

- Nelson Cruz (left today)

- Jordany Valdespin

- Antonio Bastardo

- Sergio Escalona

- Jesus Montero

- Jhonny Peralta

- Francisco Cerveli (left in 2012)

- Everth Cabrera (left in 2012)

If you are a MLB player and they represent you, find a new agency now.

By cheating you mean his use of testosterone and HGH? So other than providing him with a competitive advantage of quicker recovery time, ask yourself did it improve his batting average or fielding? One could Rgue that it may have given him additional strength to muscle say 15-20 more homers than usual but so what.

If these PEDs were all they claim then how is that the guys in the minors, who are still in the minors, have not made the jump to the bigs let alone are today’s stars.

Hitting 3 out of 10 is still the gold standard in baseball and the last I checked only 26 players are currnently above that mark. ARod gas a lifetime average of .300 and if he was getting a “boost” from the PEDs then can someone explain to me his .263 post season career average.

This cheater should be laughed out of the game. ARod should have a lifetime ban.

Pete Rose broke a rule but just damn, he didn't cheat - for years.

Rodriguez most definitely does NOT belong in the HoF.

He disappeared in post season. His numbers are deceiving, he does great when nothing is on the line, but folds when it matters.

He will never get in. It’s not all about numbers. Obviously, this author hasn't’t read the voting rules that refer to integrity and sportsmanship. This is why Bonds, McGwire and the rest of the cheaters will never get in either.

Right on. Sports writers are hero worshippers and they won't go to the dark side for their hero's. His number mean nothing now. He is a cheat.

As if Rodriquez was using steroids to re-grow hair. Is the writer this dense?

Yeah, PEDs really "helped" Nelson Cruz.

Now he's ruined two Rangers' seasons.

We'll see...Rangers 5; Angels 2 without Cruz...they face weak opposition throughout August.

Well maybe the other guys will step up. And they do have fairly solid pitching.
