We mixed iodine crystals with ammonia nitrate and after a few whirls in the centrifuge we had touch powder. Lots of smoke and flash but no real damage.

Doesn’t something at atmosphere have to expand in volume to to orders of magnitude of atmospheres of the space to explode ?

Somehow I remember removing the wrapping on dud firecrackers and watching the powder fizzle, rather than go BANG?

I’m having aa hard time with this as a potential explosive if the Islamakaze is still wearing them.

Ammonium Nitrate will blow oak stumps out of the ground nicely. About a pound is all you need.

Potassium nitrate with a little sulfur and carbon works good too!

This is hardly rocket science.

Which is why they probably developed it with a grant from the newly, revamped Obama Muslim Outreach Program (Previously known as NASA).

IIRC, nitrogen tri-iodide explosion reacts with the air, and the products of combustion occupy considerably less volume than the air that was consumed. The air rushing back in to fill the vacuum adds considerably to the bang factor.

In high school chem class back in the 70s, the teacher used to teach the students how to make an explosive compound called nitrogen triiodide. It was stable when wet, highly unstable when dry. We used to make party poppers out of the stuff: pack small bits of it into toilet paper, twist the ends, let them dry, then toss them around. It was fun! (Of course, this was back when no one thought of using the stuff to blow up a building or airliner!)

Effed-up people sure screw things up for the rest of us!

If it's purple, it's likely potassium permanganate (KMn04).

It was made with ammonium hydroxide and solid iodine. It wasn't really purple, but more brown colored as someone said. When it dried, it sometimes went off on its own. However it went off, it produced a wonderful purple cloud.

I made a chunk about the size of a pea and put it in the sun on a classroom window sill. When it went off, the principal came running since it sounded like a gunshot. Made the ears ring. That was in the 70s. No KMnO4 involved, BTW.

We also sprinkled it damp in tiny pieces outside of classroom doors. By the end of the period, the kids came out and there were hundreds of small crack sounds as kids stepped on the pieces. You could actually feel them through thin shoe soles.

The whole batch never dried all at the same time, so the explosion threw damp pieces all over the place and those pieces went off at the slightest movement as each of them dried. Very sensitive stuff.

What’s the rate of smoking in Muslim majority countries? Fairly high IIRC. Time for a fire sale of premium jihadi quality prayer rugs there.

At least it’s not Dihydrogen Monoxide, that stuff will kill you.

Do you mean Oxidane? It's certainly very deadly.

By themselves no, but put it in a container and watch the fun.

Loudest boom I ever made was a sheet of paper towel and a 2L soda bottle, and I launched an oil filter out of a pipe stuck in the ground like a mortar when I was a kid, 3 sheets put it into the clouds.

Yes, according to one very old legend it nearly ended life on Earth and would have had not one family had the foresight to build a vessel that protected them and all their pets.

You cheated with the pipe.

All of my rockets, except the first, were self errecting with a thrust deflector that used a lead fishing weight melted onto a short length of welding rod as an operator.

“takes a very small explosion to rip a hole in the fuselage of a pressurized jet.”

Or you could soak cotten clothes in TNT — be stable enough, then put a small amount of a wet contact explosive on it as the ignitor -— when dry, and assuming any movement, BOOOM.
