Al Qaeda Conference Call Intercepted by U.S. Officials Sparked Alerts
The Daily Beast ^ | August 7, 2013 | Eli Lake and Josh Rogin

t wasn’t just any terrorist message that triggered U.S. terror alerts and embassy closures—but a conference call of more than 20 far-flung al Qaeda operatives, Eli Lake and Josh Rogin report.

The crucial intercept that prompted the U.S. government to close embassies in 22 countries was a conference call between al Qaeda’s senior leaders and representatives of several of the group’s affiliates throughout the region.

Several news outlets reported Monday on an intercepted communication last week between Zawahiri and Nasser al-Wuhayshi, the leader of al Qaeda’s affiliate based in Yemen. But The Daily Beast has learned that the discussion between the two al Qaeda leaders happened in a conference call that included the leaders or representatives of the top leadership of al Qaeda and its affiliates calling in from different locations, according to three U.S. officials familiar with the intelligence. All told, said one U.S. intelligence official, more than 20 al Qaeda operatives were on the call.

Ahhh, so THIS is why the phony alerts were issued over the weekend: to show how necessary it is to collect all of our phone, email, and Internet information.

I hear a lot of Republicans defending this blatant 4th amendment violation too.

Maybe AQ knows how to run a PPT presentation from their laptop, ‘cause no one I ever worked for could manage it.

Its a shame we don't have a competent news media anymore.

They are competent.

They just don't do fair and balanced.

They shill for the communist/terrorist left 24/7.

Sins of omission the worst of all.

I don’t understand why the details were released of who they heard talking. Now, they make Zawari change how he communicates.

‘A conference call’?? LOL..sorry but that strikes me as ridiculous! If true though,it really puts the lie to Obama regime claim that AQ is on the run. Heck...if we are to believe this..the animals are scheduling conference calls and basically operating unmolested. So tell us again how useful the NSA domestic spying is again Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain? Sounds like the NSA should turn those ears to the Middle East and stop using the technology to coerce and harass the Statists political enemies on behalf of Obama.

Here is the big problem....they think most in this country are stupid enough to buy all the conflicting lies and perhaps they are right! Even Fox News seems to think the A Rod story is more important than getting to the bottom of Benghazi and the collapse of our foreign policy in Middle East.

Heaven help us!

Its a shame we don't have a competent news media anymore.

The news media is to news as Cheez Wiz is to cheese. They don't do news. They do "processed news product." They are largely just stenographers for the government establishment and their advertisers.

An easy way to know if your "news" media source is not legitimate journalism is if they have regular one-on-one interviews with government officials and corporate execs. Access to those people is the leverage used to make sure those media outfits never go too fqr off script.

AQ and Taliban do not use telephone or internet to communicate - haven’t since the Bush years when they learned early on that when they used the telephone or internet to discuss terrorist business that a drone or Seal team would soon pay a visit. I suspect the bad guys are playing games with us and sitting back having a good laugh because of all the havoc they can cause.

Loose lips sink ships. If you have a direct link to their conference calls, why tell the enemy that you are listening in?

If they, the terrorists, know our top officialis are sympathectic to terrorism they are likely to try anything.

I agree. I just wonder what the panic is about. Could be two things- big attack planned, or Obama’s popularity.

If this is a false run and it’s August - it could be a plan for September. September is their favorite month.

After a while, the ‘team’ would admit to the CEO that they aren’t team-orientated, and they need an off-site to do team exercises, and get themselves back into the grove.

Then Warren would comment about the ethnic nature of the team, and there just enough Asians. The HR Mullah would look around and eventually agree. So a Asian recruitment officer would be appointed and given high priority to bring Asians onboard.

Later, Mullah Danny would comment about his promised status promotion, and the lack of new interns under his view.

Finally, someone would comment that the ISO 9000 rating was in jeopardy unless they spent $2 million on a audit and a review. Everyone would be scared about the lack of labels on drawers, and the general disrepair of the coffee machine....all of which could hurt their ratings attempt.

A "conference call"?

Yeah, sure.....and next week Al Queda will have a meeting of its board of directors to discuss plans for a convention in Tampa.
