The Navy has decided that it will not repair the nuclear-powered submarine USS Miami after concluding that the cost of repairing damage from a fire set by a civilian worker is more than it can afford due to mandated budget cuts.

Disgraceful.

I wonder how Democrats will spin this.

Just put it ‘aside’ like Jimmah did with the B-1. Americans will square it all away once there is an American in the W.H. Again.

The loss of a nuclear sub is bad, but just think how many Obama phones this frees up for the poor huddling masses. /s

Seriously though...the guy only got 17 years? His actions should’ve been considered treason, with justice provided at the end of a rope.

“Disgraceful.

Democrats love it. They want to gut the military. What Democrats want strong is DHS to control the likes of us. It’s a decision they will sorely regret.

We are the United Socialist States of Detroit.

Bravo Sierra.

We are already behind the curve on maintaining our nuclear attack sub force at current levels with the new Virginia Class builds. Fixing the Miami is far cheaper than adding a new Virginia sub into the cycle at this point.

My guess is that what they plan is simply further reduce our overall number. Obama is allowing our naval strength to be overall reduced (and this is one vessel in that) as the Chinese continue to grow their Navy far, far more quickly

The guy hurts 7 people and cause hundreds of millions of dollars in damage, and all he gets is 17 years in prison? He'll probably get out a lot earlier than that too.

Ugh.

They’ll blame the sequester, which they’ve successfully blamed on the GOP.

It is a disgrace though. We’re running on fumes.

People we need to bring back US industry.

I'm missing how this relates to the article. Can you clarify?

I hope you're not laboring under the belief that the gop doesn't want that just as much as team blue.

It's the Republicans' fault for agreeing to the kenyan's sequester.

We need to support our defense industry.

Our economy has to be growing, to do so.

Right now we have sent so much industry to China, that China’s industry is growing. Not America’s.

We need to bring American industry back to America, and stop supporting China’s growth.

I hesitate to say “America first” because there is a bit of that which has connotations.

But America again.

We need to bring back US industry and re-build our manufacturing base.

China is aggressively growing.

We need to rebuild.

A shipyard worker, Casey James Fury, of Portsmouth, N.H., was sentenced to 17 years in prison after admitting he set fire to the Miami, which was in dry dock during a 20-month overhaul at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.

Can I assume this douchbag is democRAT?

I was a little bit miffed on reading this.

But, OTOH, a big fire like this that’s damaged metal and multiple systems... I think for our sailors’ sake, it might be better to salvage what can be salvaged and scrap the rest. I’m not sure I’d want to trust my life to a sub that had been repaired after a fire.

No, I don’t think that the GOP wants it as much. The reason being, the GOP isn’t that smart. The GOP is a confederation of self interested individuals, willing to do, say or support anything that improves their personal wealth.

The number of unknowns in this rebuild have to be incomprehensible. The unknown / unresolved / unknowable effects of fire on metallurgy would seem to be insurmountable.

17 years? He got 17 years for this? His life is not worth the price of the sub let alone the 7 injured. He needs to be snuffed.

I work for a company that does most of our work in China. What you said cannot be overstated. Our clients are aggressive Chinese capitalists. When they make a lot of money, the build more manufacturing facilities. Instead of hindering construction, as would happen in America, the government removes every obstacle to construction. Even if those obstacles are people’s houses.
