Not Everyone Who Has an Abortion Is a Woman - How to Frame the Abortion Rights Issue
Truth Out ^ | July 31, 2013 | Lauren Rankin

Posted on 08/07/2013 4:40:29 PM PDT by Pinkbell

The "War on Women" isn't just a war on women. Trans men and gender-non-conforming people are losing their rights too, and we need to rework how we frame these "women's issues."

The last month has been particularly brutal for abortion rights activists and women's health advocates, as state after state has proposed and/or passed various bills that restrict abortion access and undermine abortion care. In response, there has been a re-energized reproductive rights movement, with many across the nation stating that they "Stand With Texas Women" or "Stand With North Carolina Women." But in this response, abortion rights activists have overlooked and dismissed a very important reality: Not everyone who has an abortion is a woman.

Abortion is so often framed as a women's issue by both those who advocate for abortion rights and those who seek to dismiss abortion as frivolous. And for abortion rights, a movement that took root in the late 1960s and early 1970s, this makes sense. Prior to a deeper understanding and problematizing of gender and the way that it works, in our social construction, only women had abortions because only women could get pregnant. But in 2013, we should know better, and we need to do better.

At this crucial moment for reproductive freedom and abortion access, the abortion rights movement stands at yet another crossroads: How do we adequately address and include those who have abortions but are not women?

We must acknowledge and come to terms with the implicit cissexism in assuming that only women have abortions. Trans men have abortions. People who do not identify as women have abortions. They deserve to be represented in our advocacy and activist framework...

Not satire, folks, just the works of a depraved mind.

This woman is so openminded that her brains have falled out. This is what happens when moral absolutes are tossed in the trash and replaced with moral relativism. This is what happens when you emote and feel rather than think.

Anyone with any knowledge of human biology knows that only women are capable of getting pregnant, and this applies to women who think they are men. The fact they got pregnant in the first place would be odd anyway because if they think they are men, then they would like women, right? I mean one woman can't get another pregnant, right? That is unless they they think they are a gay man trapped inside the body of a woman. Or they could have slept with a man who thinks that he's a woman like those teens I posted a couple of weeks ago. However, if he's a man who thinks that he's a woman, wouldn't he have sex with men? Of course, these women do think they are men. Unless he's a gay man who thinks he's a lesbian woman who is attracted to the female parts these women still have. That wouldn't be respecteful in liberalism, though, because you are supposed to consider people the gender they feel they are. I'm so confused. Damn you, liberalism, look what you've done to me.

The bottom line is this, only women can get pregnant, and if a woman who thinks she's a man manages to pregnant, then that is biology waking her up. Of course, the "pregnant man" got pregnant multiple times and still believed she was a man. The media supported her on it. Yet, we're the ones who are called anti-science. What a screwed up world we live in.

On the plus, the majority of comments on this site seem to be trashing this piece, so maybe there is some hope afterall.

Edit to remove the word “gay” man:

Just imagine if they didn't care.

those who seek to dismiss abortion as frivolous

What? I have never heard anyone describe abortion as "frivolous". Many consider it an emergency medical measure, others backup birth control, and some a hobby (Sandra Fluke). Those who are pro-life consider abortion to be the murder of completely innocent people. Who thinks it's frivolous?

This sort of hurts their argument that men shouldn’t have an opinion because its all about women

It was “Men should butt out, its none of their business” and now it somehow becomes “Not just women become pregnant”.. which is insane of course.

The author is missing the point, it takes a woman
AND a man to conceive an offspring.
What gives a woman the sole right to terminate
an off spring in which TWO interests are involved?
No one would accept a man’s sole right to abortion.
There are real problems here that have never been
adjudicated.

Why is it that if the woman decides to carry to term
against the wishes of the father that HE is libel for
child support?

Tricky guestions that need answers.
Abortion is still murder though.

Remember all of the slavishly positive press the "pregnant man" got not long ago?

Thing is, "he" was just a woman who had her boobs lopped off and was taking hormones. She didn't have her female parts removed.

And was apparently having sex...with men.

roughly 33% of all people that have had abortions are males

of course, it wasn’t their choice

Is that a verb or a noun?

Prior to a deeper understanding and problematizing of gender and the way that it works, in our social construction, only women had abortions because only women could get pregnant.

Don't think of this as "nonsense" or "hopeless confusion", think of it as "advanced social thought". For those of us retrograde enough to believe that A is A, we're wrong, it's all a social construct - A can also be not-A if it pretends hard enough, and it's hurtful and prejudiced to suggest otherwise. Or so we are earnestly told.

It is useless to attempt to reason with these people. When a simple declarative statement such as "you are a man" may not even be uttered because it might hurt someone's feelings, there is simply no common ground from which reason may operate.

It is sometimes useless even to attempt to communicate with them. "Cissexism" - I looked it up - is a neologism that criminalizes the assumption that if a fellow has external genitalia and a beard, he's thinking more clearly if he concludes he's a man because of that than if he concludes he's a woman despite it. It will, I am sure, be illegal in California soon.

Earth to this moron....the Wo in Woman stands for "womb" ...this is were the child develops. As there are no artificial wombs at this time...you must have a womb to have a child. .i.e. be a WO-man

You are still being insensitive, Lauren. What about trans-species-gender reproductive rights? Trapped in the body of a human male for most of my life, I became a female Rainbow Trout in the late 90s (don’t judge me, I was BORN that way!). Each spring, I refuse to lay my eggs or even take part in the spawning run. IT”S MY BODY AND MY REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS, LAUREN!!!!.

I have this feeling of abandonment by the reproductive rights crowd. I’ve been to nearly twenty reproductive justice rallies and have yet to hear one person mention the plight of the rainbow trout...or toss out any good chum. I’m starting to think I will go on the spawning run next spring just so I’ll feel “normal.” Where is MY reproductive justice, Lauren? Why have I been forgotten?

I’m sorry if this makes you feel even worse about your insensitive, cisspecies world view, but I want you to hurt a little. It’s so unfair. It’s like a #6 Woolly Bugger fly ripping at my gut every time you ignore MY struggles.

I hope this broadens your closed-minded view of the trans-species-gender issue. I want you to be able to sleep at night.

And STOP EATING AT LONG JOHN SILVER’S YOU NAZI !!!

Sincerely,

“Bubbles” the Rainbow Trout

I don’t find it strange at all that you identify as a rainbow trout. Personally, I identify as a 1941 Ford 9N farm tractor with a three point hitch and power take off, gender female. I think there’s room for all types of gender identification, or even gender rejection, in our society, and working toward that acceptance and promoting tolerance amongst the different genders (or non genders) is going to be essential to move away from the patriarchal “norms” of the past and into a 21st century where people are not classified by what’s between their legs, but what’s in their heart.

That said, when plowing season comes along, stay the f*** out of my way.

With a three point hitch you may be transtractor but, definitely not female.
I think you may have deeper issues.
Stay tuned, I’m sure Lauren will be addressing just this subject presently.

Gender is just a state of ignition coil, and mine says female. I just want to meet a nice round baler to settle down with, same as anyone else (preferably Massey Ferguson or Case/International...hubba hubba!)
