The Washington _________
Slate ^ | 08/08/2013 | David Plotz

Why Slate will no longer refer to Washington’s NFL team as the Redskins.

This is the last Slate article that will refer to the Washington NFL team as the Redskins.

For decades, American Indian activists and others have been asking, urging, and haranguing the Washington Redskins to ditch their nickname, calling it a racist slur and an insult to Indians. They have collected historical and cultural examples of the use of redskin as a pejorative and twice sued to void the Redskins trademark, arguing that the name cannot be legally protected because it’s a slur. (A ruling on the second suit is expected soon; the first failed for technical reasons.) A group in the House of Representatives also recently introduced a bill to void the trademark. The team has been criticized from every different direction, by every kind of person. More than 20 years ago, Washington Post columnist Tony Kornheiser, no politically correct squish, urged the team to abandon the name. Today, the mayor of Washington, D.C.—the mayor!—goes out of his way to avoid saying the team’s name.

Why, then, has nothing changed? Because the choice of the team’s name belongs to one person, Washington owner Daniel Snyder. He has brushed off the controversy with arm waves at “tradition,” “competitiveness,” and “honor.” He recently told USA Today, “We’ll never change the name. It’s that simple. NEVER—you can use caps.”

“And what should replace Redskins? A D.C. city councilmember cleverly proposed “Redtails,” the nickname of the Tuskegee Airmen. It nods at the city’s African-American heritage, and would allow Snyder to keep a feather in the logo.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If a team name like Redskin or Cherokee means derision, scorn and contempt for a group instead of highly valuing that group, then doesn’t that apply to a name like “Washington Redtails”?
These morons can’t figure out that sports teams do not use racial slurs for their nicknames. The word “red” as a self-designation is ubiquitous in Native American parlance, even among leftist-oriented Native Americans. “God is Red,” for example, was a popular book among the Native American left.
Liberal heads will explode if they ever run across this from our Declaration of Independence:
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
I am going to go against the grain here, but I think the Redskins name is kinda sill. I have always thought that a team's nickname should reflect the city or region they are located in. Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos etc.
I always thought the Washington Bullets reflected more accurately on the city than the Washington what ever they are now. Oh yeah Wizards. Wizards????? No, I would love to see the Redskins name changed to the Washington Grafters. Any other ideas.
My alma mater - Jesuit-run Seattle University, which has turned hard-left since I was there - changed its nickname from “Chieftains” to “Red Hawks” a number of years ago. What is offensive about “Chieftains”? In fact, it is technically not even limited to Native American culture, although that of course was the intent when it was chosen. At least “Red Hawks” is a decent name with some local relevance, unlike the absurd “Stanford Cardinal.”
Seriously all. Ya gotta read that Slate article to believe it. It is FILLED with jaw-dropping crap:
Changing how you talk changes how you think. The adoption of the term “African-American”—replacing “Negro” and “colored”—in the aftermath of the civil rights movement brought a welcome symmetry with Italian-Americans and Irish-Americans, groups defined by geographic origin rather than by race or color. Replacing “same-sex marriage” with “marriage equality” helped make gay marriage a universal cause rather than a special pleading. If Slate can do a small part to change the way people talk about the team, that will be enough.
OK then. I'll support a name other than Redskins WHEN the NAACP and the Negro College Fund change THEIR names.
