(Newser) – Now that the Supreme Court has overturned the Defense of Marriage Act, the Pentagon is reviewing a plan that would extend full marriage benefits to same-sex couples by the end of this month, according to a draft memo from Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel outlining the proposal obtained yesterday by the AP. In the process, the Defense Department would ditch a previous plan that would have allowed unmarried same-sex couples access to some limited benefits after signing a declaration form.
Now, troops will actually need to be legally married to get the benefits, but the military will give them 10 days of leave so they can travel to a state where gay marriage is legal and tie the knot. In the memo, Hagel says that the Joint Chiefs of Staff unanimously agreed that "the spousal and family benefits far outweigh the benefits that could be extended under a declaration system." A source tells the AP the Justice Department is reviewing the memo, and that the Pentagon can take action once that is complete.

I asked for two weeks of leave to get married (to my female wife) in 1975 and was granted 4 days. Bastards.

If you submit and get a leave request approved and are charged leave for the time that you are gone — Then the answer is yes. If they are talking about just giving these homo’s 10 days off...then that is total BS!

As a bottom side note in a way I think it’s funny.
They got what they wanted - but now have to do the deed - marriage.
Another note - some large corporations are also doing the same thing. Dropping benefits for unmarried same sex couples. They say - “Want the bennies? Then get married.”

I remember when one’s worst worry in the Navy was catching gonorrhea from a Filipina bar girl.
I remember the good old days (1987) where being gay (open or otherwise) was an automatic disqualification for enlistment.
We had this one recruit in boot who talked with the stereotypical “gay” lisp and blamed it on being raised in a household full of women. For the most part, he was treated as any other recruit by the DI’s and the platoon. However, there was this one incident where he claimed the DI’s put a dead rat in his rack...
I ran into him several years later in the fleet and he had totally lost his lisp. Born that way my a$$!

I've been inured by it all resigned to the fact that we've passed the point of no return, with none of it is going to matter much longer as this nation unravels collapses under the weight of its overbearing profligacy, depravity.
In the future, and likely not the distant future, our military will consist of only gays. Regular guys are going to get out of the military and other regular guys won’t join to start with. Gay couples having sex in a regular guy’s barracks, will be so disgusting, regular guys will leave.
Gays will rush into the military by the tens of thousands or more. Why not - get good benefits, free house on a military base if they want it, and kiss each other as they go around their military base. Would a regular guy join knowing that would be all around him? I don’t think so.
After this gets going full steam, if you saw a military man, would you thank him for his service, or ask him if he was a frigging homosexual? I’m not thanking a homosexual for anything.
I don’t care if they get 39 days of leave, BUT those days should go against the books.

They probably realized that costs would sky rocket with the declaration thing. They would have had to let heteros that were living with someone have the same benefits

Not when I did. I got married on a three day weekend but without the commander's permission (1972). I got a world class butt chewing by the first shirt and a threatened Article 15. He also threatened to not allow her to be sponsored as a dependent. All bluster but still unpleasant.
You’re right. Everything is happening at disorienting speed. We don’t even have time to get mad at our reps for doing nothing before the next issue slaps us across the face. The true warriors will hit the exits faster than people realize. It’s a living arrangement that can be quickly adapted to depraved people, when it does, decent people can only vex their souls so much.
