Schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina, are taking a moment to reevaluate things.
According to WBTV, district superintendent Dr. Heath Morrison has taken steps to confront serious problems in the education system. Of the 22 task forces Morrison created, one is tasked with addressing recurring problems of the black male youth. In the Charlotte-Mecklenburg district during last year alone, 20,000 black males were given short-term suspensions while 3,000 white males were given the same punishment.
The discrepancy was one motivating for the task force to recommend the founding of a new, all male, all black school.
Proponents argue that such a school would be safer and foster greater empathy.
“The African American male wouldn’t have to argue over females,” says rising 9th grader George Whitley. “And we can just get along and relate to each other. We wouldn’t have to worry about insults and racism.”
However, the school may encounter some legal troubles. Mary McCray, chairperson of the school board, argues, “If we are going to have an all-black school, all male school then we must create an all female school because of Title IX.” On the one hand, an all-male school may alleviate some tension. On the other hand, the presence of girls may have a mollifying effect on adolescent boys.
This is to say nothing of the troubles of implementing a one-race school program when students of other races apply from the surrounding area. Some have raised concerns of a return to segregation.
The proposal is still being discussed.

My older son graduated from, and my younger son currently attends an all-male high school. I graduated from the same school. It was a great experience. As an aside, my older son is friends with the author of this article. Small world.
Instead of job placement after graduation, they will have prison placement...

I think an all male black school is a great idea -— just as long as they have an equally-funded all white male school too. And if they want an all-female black school and an all-female white school too, then more power to them. But let’s not forget the all-Hispanic and all-Asian schools either. And for good measure, lets have an all-LGBT school too, but just one, so we don’t end up with a dozen different sub-categories. (An all-LGBT school is particularly attractive because the decision to have only one kind of bathroom should be much easier.)

I chose to go to an all-girl high school 200 miles away from home. I was a good student, but too popular (girlish blush) and asked to go away so I could actually learn something. Fortunately, parents could afford it. It was a really excellent experience. Vacations back home ? I’m not admitting anything, but teenagers are required to be a little bit rebellious.
So if these black boys can benefit from removing distractions, results may be positive. Yah, segregation, but voluntary. THAT in itself could lead in a good direction, if that’s what it takes.
Sorry, George. But "insults and racism" are not why black males fail in school. They fail because many don't give a damn, don't want to learn, disrupt class, fight, deal drugs on campus, consider studying as "acting white", etc. etc.

For the last gazillion years, teenage girls DO NOT have a "mollifying" effect on teenage boys. Just the opposite. Teenage boys preen and pose in front of them, get turned on by the modern whorish clothes they wear and fight each other over girls.

I’m from the intermountain area of the Rockies where everyone went to school together.
When my dad dragged us kids kicking and screaming to the Ozarks, the first thing we heard on the news was desegregation in Little Rock’s Central High!
I asked my dad,,”What is segregation?”
When he told me I could not comprehend it!
Then came Mississippi, Alabama, Ga. What had we gotten into! but then we lived in a section of the Ozarks where WE were the hated outsiders as everyone at our school was kin to everyone else in our school, except us, even though we were all the same race.
It’s not going to change them from being the thugs they are today.
It will affirm everything they are and believe.
Better to have at least the individual classes separated by sex during the peak of the hormonal tsunamis that define teenager-hood.
More focus of classwork than asswork, if you will.

Good, all those “Black Studies” and “Negro Studies” degrees can get put to use teaching these kids.
Best put the “experts” on the case.
But somehow I don’t think those degree earners will be signing up to teach in the inner city, but will instead opt for the suburbs. Call me skeptical.
It was like that when I was growing up, which as I remember wasn't all that bad, but for some reason they decided not to do it that way anymore.
Been done many times. Try a Conway, SC, High School, circa 1977. Brand new building. Stunning. Had multiple theaters and a massive commons. Trashed in 2 years. Trashed. Torn seats, holes in walls, windows broken, theaters destroyed, classrooms vandalized, parking lot looked like a tornado hit it, etc. Even the buses looked trashed. All black school.
That might be true too. I don’t know, but SOMETHING has to give!

i’m all for it - now they can beat, kill their own kind - it will be a regular thunderdome, getting all those ghetto gangs packed under one roof. Sounds like a genocide on a budget plan by the KKK. Geez.
Yep - that’s why all the black universities are pretty trashed - its not because of lack of funding. Its because thats their culture. I went to an all white school, beautiful facilities, top in the state. Then they started busing. In a few short years the place was trashed, grades plummetted, and police roamed the halls. Its not about race - its about culture and until they change their culture there will be no hope and change.

In Seattle, they set up an African-American Academy to supposedly address these same issues, yet the academic performance at that school remains well below the average for the district as a whole.
In a couple of years some “social justice warrior” will notice that all the kids getting in trouble at that school are...gasp.....black!!!! Cries of racism and much gnashing of teeth will ensue.

I doubt it. So far - no one but us conservatives - have noticed all the black kids getting murdered daily in inner city ghettos have been by ... gasp! ... other blacks.
A high school teacher told me he complemented a black boy who was doing extremely well. The other blacks beat him so severely he missed several days. When he came back he never performed again. I conclude that the greatest danger a black boy faces is other black boys.
The other structural problems would remain, but the fact that these two simple, obviously beneficial steps have not been taken, and probably never will, tells me the govt has no real interest in improving compulsory govt education.
I hope they allot 2-3 acres for a school cemetery.

All male school is excellent. K-8 is not, however, necessary or particularly helpful. 9-12 is where the greatest value of one sex schools is made.
Racial segregation is an amazingly stupid idea. There is nothing to be gained by separating boys by race. The only outcome would be racial identification, increased ghettoization, cultural deprivation and a host of pathologies.
Enough with racial politics. We are one culture.
Let all schools be private so they can have a school just for left-handed, green-eyed midgets of the astrological sign of Scorpio if they want.

Yeah, that’s how they do it at my sons’ high school. No girls. Dress slacks, dress shoes, ties, blazers. Juniors and seniors get a different color blazer to show rank.
Most young men thrive in a disciplined environment where education is a priority and distractions (like the presence of young ladies) are minimized. Each year, between 99% and 100% of the graduating class at my sons’ school goes off to college.
Did I mention that their school is majority minority?

My daughter just graduated from a coed Catholic school where the classes are sex separated after 5th grade. I didn’t know many of the boys in her graduating class but during the graduation activities it was easy to see a different kind of maturity and collegial spirit among them.
What about diversity?!?!
NYC has a new all-LGBT school, the Harvey Milk HS.

Yeah. I was there. Starting in 7th grade I went to four schools in six years (without changing neighborhoods) to satisfy the 30/70 black/white balance. It was lots of fun being one of the new kids over and over again. Thanks CMS. And it did a lot of good, too. CMS is still a crappy school district.

Thomas Sowell has written on his studies of education in the 1950s how the segregated all black schools in Washington D.C. had academic scores higher than the national averages, without knowing their education was “inferior” because no whites were in their classroom.
It would be wonderful if such an idea was not even considered necessary, but considering the MOTIVATION as racist is an error I believe. The only real concern should be what environment will be best for the students to focus on acadmeics above everything else.
