The White House announced that President Barack Obama will award the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award, to 16 recipients including television star and businesswoman Oprah Winfrey, legendary Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee and former President Bill Clinton.

“The Presidential Medal of Freedom goes to men and women who have dedicated their own lives to enriching ours,” Mr. Obama said in a statement released by the White House. “This year’s honorees have been blessed with extraordinary talent, but what sets them apart is their gift for sharing that talent with the world.”

Mr. Obama will award the medals later this year. In total, 16 people will receive the award, the White House said.

William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)
THE SECOND COMING

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

he should give one to me , as I have actually done more significant tangible things ( for our military ) than any of these people ,except Sally Ride 9deceased). It will never be acknowledged though . Which is fine . I will wait until the next President . God willing, NOT a Dem

This has about as much credibility as Obama winning the Nobel peace prize.

Maybe it's time for FR to start having it's own "Person of the Year" award, and also, FReeper medals of Freedom..

With all the free polling sites available..it wouldn't be hard...we'd have nominees, etc..

..for their outstanding contributions to this nation..

Between Oprah and Hitlery they probably couldn't name one. Seriously, anybody? Name one "outstanding contribution to this nation" by either of these two subhuman pieces of pig vomit.

Sally Ride I can see. Her work with young girls, getting them to consider an engineering career, is a great program. The rest of the bunch, not so much.

Had Sally not been gay, I doubt she would have made Baraq’s list.

Just like the Nobel Peace Prize - it doesn’t mean squat.

What did Monica-diddling President Clinton do to promote the freedom of America? Nothing. Instead he let the budding terrorist Osama bin Laden go free in 1995.

“In late 1995, when Bin Laden was still in Sudan, the State Department and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) learned that Sudanese officials were discussing with the Saudi government the possibility of expelling Bin Laden. CIA paramilitary officer Billy Waugh tracked down Bin Ladin in the Sudan and prepared an operation to apprehend him, but was denied authorization.”

There was an article some Freeper posted last year ago talking about this very thing, how just about every award today has been commandeered by the left and is now used exclusively to further their agenda......which is exactly what is going on here.

I heard Carol Burnett was really ticked off about this because Tina Fey, Whoopi Goldberg, Ellen Degeneres, probably three of the worst comedians in the history of comedy, were all given the Mark Twain prize for humor well before she was (she is finally getting it this year). She wasn't ticked off because she thinks she's better than them (even though she is) but because of how the left is using these awards to further their BS politics. Tina Fey was given hers immediately after her pathetic Sarah Palin imitation in a pathetic attempt to patronize the masses "Oh look how funny this is! Isn't Sarah Palin an idiot!" So to me, these awards are meaningless to me. F them all to hell, every last one of them.

A Medal of Freedom, for the guy who said we have too much freedom. Next they’ll be handing out the Nobel Peace Prize to arms dealers.
