Snowden’s e-mail provider is closing, cannot legally say why
http://www.washingtonpost.com ^ | august 8, 2013 | Andrea Peterson

The e-mail service used by National Security Agency (NSA) leaker Edward Snowden is suspending operations. And they can’t tell us why — although this cryptic post heavily suggests it has something to do with a government request for information:

I have been forced to make a difficult decision: to become complicit in crimes against the American people or walk away from nearly ten years of hard work by shutting down Lavabit. After significant soul searching, I have decided to suspend operations. I wish that I could legally share with you the events that led to my decision. I cannot. I feel you deserve to know what’s going on — the first amendment is supposed to guarantee me the freedom to speak out in situations like this. Unfortunately, Congress has passed laws that say otherwise. As things currently stand, I cannot share my experiences over the last six weeks, even though I have twice made the appropriate requests.

What’s going to happen now? We’ve already started preparing the paperwork needed to continue to fight for the Constitution in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. A favorable decision would allow me resurrect Lavabit as an American company.

1984 was never meant to be a training manual for the government!

Cannot say why? Well, we know why. But the simple fact that this hangs over anyone is deeply disturbing.

Perhaps more disturbing is the number of Republicans perfectly okay with it.

I am a man without a party.

I'm not sure you need the word "Perhaps" in that statement, Red in Blue PA. The Vichy Republican party is not up to the task.

The war on the AMERICAN CITIZEN is picking up at an alarming place, with the administration ordering yet another group or individual to remain silent to its abuse.

Add this to the list that already includes CIA personnel who know anything about what took place in Benghazi, family members of Ft. Hood victims, health insurance companies unable to explain to subscribers that their premiums have increased because of Obamacare, et al.

I also will go out on a limb and predict that ‘journalists’ have also been threatened to report the administration B.S., or else.

This is very disturbing and America had better wake up — before it’s told ‘not to’...

The Patriot Act bars targets from uttering anything about their case.

A true tool to infringe on your bill of rights.

Not entirely true; journ0lists will eagerly and willingly spike any derogatory story with no coercion needed.

They are happily doing their Socialist duty for The Obama, The Messiah, The Won.

This all goes back to Prohibition.

Declaring citizens persona non grata, for their choice of intoxicants.

Tipping a glass didn't make you a criminal! The LAW DID!

Now EVERYBODY is a suspect! We no longer have constitutional rights. Instead of removing the problem, we have all become PRISONERS, to be strip searched any where at any time for any reason! Detained in our travels! Restricted in travels by having to provide papers. Forced off our land by so called public servants. Debt upon debt forced upon those yet to be born.

Despots don't just peaceably hand over their choke-hold on their slaves! It aint pretty, but neither is SLAVERY!

Oh, I certainly agree with this, but I was mainly referring to those few who have demonstrated the temerity to waiver slightly from the party line. I have no doubt that pressure has been brought to bear on them - directly, through their bosses, etc.
